The best comics of the week: November 14, 2024
#5: Power Rangers Prime #1
Power Rangers Prime #1 delivers a truly unique take on the Power Rangers Universe in the vein of Ultimate Spider-Man and Absolute Superman. Whether you’re a lifelong Power Rangers fan or a newcomer, you should check out this comic – and given a surprise appearance from another group of ’90s characters, Flores and Yg are aiming to push the envelope when it comes to shaking up the Rangers’ world.

#4: G.I. Joe #1
In many ways, this feels like it’s doing for Hasbro’s Real American Heroes what the Absolute or Ultimate lines are doing for DC and Marvel characters, respectively. This G.I. Joe gives us heroes that we recognize (and some new faces), complete with the bright and colorful hallmarks of its toyetic beginnings, yet also frames them in a world that has gotten much darker around them. It’s felt harder than ever to believe in heroes as of late, but I’m happy the Joes are back in fine fighting form.

#3: Absolute Batman #2
Absolute Batman #2 gladly adheres to the “rule of cool”, each page turn feeling like a museum exhibit that reveals a newer, bigger, cooler thing at every corner. Unfortunately, the creative twists on Batman’s iconography pushing him to his highest highs don’t necessarily entail many new characterizations or fresh interpersonal drama absent from his other appearances. At least not yet. For newcomers, however, this buy is a no-brainer that will get you hooked on Batman comics in no time at all.

#2: Precious Metal #6
It’s an ending, I might add, that will stay with me for sometime. Not only as something I mull over (and which necessitates future re-reads), but that has helped enhance my understanding of myself, my relationships, and the world around me. If memory is the building blocks of life, then Precious Metal is dear now and forever.

#1: Amazing Spider-Man #61
This is a winning opening issue to the story arc, as the art is fun and matches the fun vibe of the dialogue and pace. Amazing Spider-Man #61 is a refreshing, action-packed ride that embraces both the humor and high-stakes drama that fans love about Spider-Man. With Joe Kelly’s witty, fast-paced dialogue, Spider-Man’s personality shines through, offering levity even as he faces off against a new wave of supernatural threats.
