Spider-Man’s fight against the Eight Scions of Cyttorak isn’t going well, but luckily, the X-Men have entered the story to pick up the slack. Peter Parker has effectively given up on the mission, but can he break the rules and prevent Earth from losing no matter what? I guess we’ll find out in a game-changer issue that sets up an unexpected threat in Amazing Spider-Man #67.
Picking up where we left off, Peter Parker is shacking up with Black Cat and is in a deep funk. He’s seen so many lives lost he’s come to the conclusion nothing is worth saving. A bummer point of view, but certainly, Peter can find another gear to keep going. As this issue reveals, even an enlightening Doctor Strange flashback can’t rustle up motivation.
Thankfully, the X-Men have entered the conversation as Earth’s protectors. Right off the bat, it’s clear Justina Ireland is quite good at writing Cyclops. He’s a master strategist, and it’s fun to see him directing each of the members as they fight a Scion. They more or less keep him at bay but aren’t making a dent…that is, until Juggernaut enters the fight. With deep ties to these Scions and their power, it’s going to be interesting to see how the lug-head can save the world.
Outside of the X-Men scenes, the flashback Doctor Strange uses to help Spider-Man get back in the fight is quite awesome. Niko Henrichon returns to show us the supernatural weirdness of a past act by Dr. Strange. The painterly full-page splash is as epic as they come.
There are also major developments involving a past losing Scion. Ireland expertly weaves his new motivation into the flashback, making his rise feel earned. We also know this Scion is rather rash, which means more power in his hands is going to be really bad for Earth.
Andrea Broccardo draws most of the issue with clean and exciting X-Men action scenes. Each member gets to do a little something in this issue, which should please X-Men fans. The style is ever so slightly less detailed than in other chapters of this story, but they don’t disappoint on full-page splashes. The “Rot Dogs” are also pretty freaky with gross-looking heads.
Amazing Spider-Man #67 balances intense action and a rich flashback, with the X-Men stealing the spotlight in a way their fans will appreciate. However, Spider-Man’s personal journey struggles to maintain momentum, leaving the issue somewhat lopsided.
