Deadpool has lost his damn mind, literally to Stryfe, and Wolverine has to deal with it. That’s the basic plot of Deadpool/Wolverine, with the second issue out this week. Mixing things up is Maverick, an on-again and off-again enemy of Wolverine, but what is the bigger plan? Things start to come into focus in this second issue, although giant skeleton monsters are much more what it’s all about in Deadpool/Wolverine #2!
If you’re wondering if writer Benjamin Percy is going to draw out the villain, you’d be wrong – he kicks off the issue. Somehow, he’s commanding Deadpool to do his bidding, and he has a super cool cave headquarters that rivals Batman. There’s some kind of time travel tomfoolery going on, and while there isn’t a whole lot explained, there’s enough here to set up the big action. And seriously, isn’t that why we’re reading this comic?
Joshua Cassara will blow you away multiple times with the art in this issue. Outside of cool costumes, like Maverick’s handler’s dress and a suit Wolverine refuses to wear, and size and scale are on point in this issue. That includes a four-armed pterodactyl big enough to eat a helicopter like a sandwich. There are panels here with enough detail to be full-page splashes, so you know the dynamic art is coming fast and hot.
As far as Deadpool and Wolverine, they’re mostly reacting to stuff rather than getting important character work. Deadpool is particularly absent since he’s being mind-controlled, but Percy gives him some tried and true silly dialogue. It’s a reminder he writes a great Deadpool, as he did in his X-Force run.
That goes for Stryfe as well. He’s mostly enacting a plan with little interruption, but his motivations and his whole deal are a mystery. Likely we’ll get more of that later, but it’s a tad frustrating Maverick’s boss has more time to shine than Stryfe.
Deadpool/Wolverine #2 thrives on over-the-top action and jaw-dropping visuals, but with minimal character focus, it leans heavily on its spectacle rather than its storytelling depth.
