What happens when the apocalypse arrives, and the world’s wealthiest man decides saving humanity is less important than saving himself?
That’s the unsettling question at the heart of The Forever Home, a new six-issue sci-fi thriller from writer Christian Ward and artist Sami Kivelä arriving from Oni Press this September.
The series centers on billionaire scientist Henry D’mour, a man who may have had the ability to save the world but instead chose a different path. As civilization collapses, Henry retreats into a technological marvel known as The Forever Home alongside his wife and two children. The luxurious refuge protects them from the devastation outside while also manipulating the flow of time itself.
Within the walls of The Forever Home, twenty minutes pass for every year that elapses beyond its barriers. Surrounded by advanced technology and robotic companions, the family believes they have secured their future while waiting for the world beyond to stabilize.
Then something goes wrong.
A simple mistake compromises the home’s protective barrier, opening a door to whatever has survived outside after centuries of isolation. Suddenly, the family’s sanctuary becomes something far more terrifying.
For Ward, the origins of the story were rooted in contemporary anxieties about climate change, wealth, and survival.
“The horror of THE FOREVER HOME was easy to find,” said Ward. “It’s in the ever increasing news stories that seem to surround us. Stories of a changing world. Of more and more extreme weather. Where it’s not hard to imagine people in the world whose survival is being pushed to the brink by that change and of course, it’s equally not hard to believe the conspiracies of the billionaires building themselves bunkers and liferafts for imagined apocalypse. That’s the angry seed from which we grow the story of this book. Soaked in the terror that sometimes you have to go impossible lengths to keep your family safe.”
Oni Press Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn praised the creative team’s vision, comparing the project to classic science fiction and modern social horror.

Kivelä said the book’s visual identity emerged from blending futuristic concepts with familiar imagery.
“Designing this post-apocalyptic book was a fascinating process of visualizing what the world looks like when the past meets the future,” Kivelä explained. “Our house and its surroundings are filled with retro-inspired sci-fi elements and robots, but they also include many details that feel familiar to people today. I think that this contrast creates an unexpected setting that invites our readers to explore more.”
Ward also highlighted the significance of reuniting with Kivelä following their work on Machine Gun Wizards.
“In my two decades of comic making, THE FOREVER HOME is one of the books I’m most proud of, not least because Sami Kivelä (who I’m reteaming with after working together on Machine Gun Wizards) is doing the work of his career,” Ward said. “So I hope you’ll join us in THE FOREVER HOME, but please, make sure to close the door after you.”
