Comic book fans love to hear their favorite creators discuss the craft, but what about the passions that fuel their creativity outside of comics? That’s exactly what the new Superfan Podcast is here to explore. The show, hosted by Eyes of Wakanda writer Christian Gossett, Mad Cave Studios’ Nakama Press Senior Editor Kristen Simon, and Superfan Promotions founder David Hyde, will take listeners on a deep dive into the non-comic-related inspirations of some of the biggest names in the industry.
The first season of Superfan Podcast features an impressive lineup of guests, including Killadelphia writer and Peabody Award-winning screenwriter Rodney Barnes, Wonder Woman Historia writer and Eisner winner Kelly Sue DeConnick, Star Wars: Jedi Knights writer and Emmy-winning screenwriter Marc Guggenheim, acclaimed cartoonist Matt Kindt, Monstress writer Marjorie Liu, and Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell.
“Now more than ever, it’s important to have conversations about the things that bring us joy,” said co-host Christian Gossett, best known for his radical concept drawing of Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber. “Every decision we are making with the Superfan Podcast is about creating a vibe of positivity and creativity. We want to invite everyone to a big party, one where writers and artists can speak at length, with verve and style, about the things that inspire them.”
Before the official launch of the podcast, fans can get a taste of what’s to come at WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, where the show’s co-hosts will hold an inaugural panel. Titled We Are All Superfans, the event takes place Sunday, March 30th, from 1:00–2:00 PM in Room 207. Joining the hosts are acclaimed writer Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian) and cartoonist Marco Finnegan (The Keeper) for a candid discussion about fandom.
“But what do comic book creators do in their free time to recharge and refill their creative well?” asked co-host Kristen Simon. “That’s what this podcast is all about, and we’re eager to receive feedback from a live audience at WonderCon.”
Superfan Promotions founder and podcast co-host David Hyde sees the show as an opportunity to replicate the deep-cut interviews that influenced him as a young fan. “Growing up, my favorite creator interviews weren’t about promoting a new release but about the books, films, and art that inspired them,” he said. “We want to create a space where superstar writers and artists can be fans themselves, and where their fans can join them for a deep dive into a specific fandom.”
Season One of Superfan Podcast is edited by Bryant Dillon with production assistance from Fanbase Press, the title sponsor of the season’s episodes. The show’s logo was designed by Criswell Lappin, former Creative Director of Metropolis Magazine.
