Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

Colin shares his favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

There is a veritable cornucopia of new comics hitting stands each week. While readers often know exactly what it is they’re most interested in (those in the know have got their pull-list sitting in their comic shop’s ever-reliable hands), there is something to be said about going against that old truism and Judging a Book by Its Cover.

Some truly astounding cover art hits each and every week, and these are the ones that caught Colin’s eye the week of April 16th, 2025.

Daredevil: Unleash Hell #4

Cover by Paulo Siqueira

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

Riding double with Ghost Rider seems like a hazard to the second passenger. Elektra is a brave soul. Siquera embraces a Mark Texiera-style Rider, stern eyeholes and all, but the classic Johnny Blaze details of both the costume and bike so nicely differentiate him from Danny Ketch. I’m curious to see how the Earth-616 Muse differs from the one recently preying on people in Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again.

Godzilla vs. Hulk #1

Variant by Ed McGuinness

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

Why wouldn’t they get one of the premiere Hulk artists of the last 20 years to draw a cover for Godzilla vs. Hulk? Hulk is massive in the way that only McGuinness seems to lean into — all blocky and bulky. I love the commitment to the classic Godzilla design — this is full man-in-a-rubber-suit Godzilla, and that delights me.

Red Sonja Attacks Mars #2

Cover by Joseph Michael Linsner

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

This illustration is slick. Distressing, but slick. It’s alarming to see the interior of a Mars Attacks brain — just a homogenous and gelatinous bulk. Delicious. Lisner plays into his pin-uppy classics with Sonja, but that sort of aesthetic plays into the retro-futurism necessary to pull off the Martian’s mechanically nonsense spacesuit.

Summer of Superman Special #1

Variant by Alexander Lozano

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

A delightful portrait of Supergirl in her classic miniskirt and boots; sure, I miss the rad flightsuit-style costume Kara’s been sporting recently, but you can’t help but celebrate the classics.

Superior Avengers #1

Variant by Joshua Cassara

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

The only modern art Doom approves is Doom art. You have to wonder if this is what all Latverian art galleries look like: paintings like this and maybe a few Alicia Masters sculptures. Doom decrees it.

Wonder Woman #20

Variant by Guillem March

Judging by the Cover – 04/16/25 new releases

Guillem March has such a distinctive sensibility — solid cartooning and a sort of tropical color palette that is perfectly suited for Paradise Island. Even looming Batman feels captured in the bathing warmth of a Mediterranean sunset.
