‘Free Comic Book Day 2025: Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men’ #1 review

A fun, fast-paced Marvel sampler that blends heart, action, and humor while teasing bold new beginnings for Ms. Marvel.

The glorious Free Comic Book Day is finally here, and with it, a taste of what’s to come from the likes of DC, Marvel, IDW, and more! The Marvel FCBD comics are possibly the hottest FCBD comics, largely because they always tease what comes next, making them a big conversation starter. Nothing is hotter than the FCBD Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men #1, setting up the Ms. Marvel-led Giant-Size one-shots, and showing what Ryan North and Humberto Ramos can do on Fantastic Four!

First up is the FF story by North and Ramos. Instead of a teaser and lead-in to what comes next, this is more of a fun done-in-one tale. The story involves some child aliens who summon the Fantastic Four to their world. Soon the FF are saving the alien kiddos and showing off their abilities. It’s a good taste tester for the powers these heroes have, but also their personalities. The icing on the cake is a finale page that shows the wholesomeness of this team.

Next is the X-Men story, which is 90% a fight comic and 10% setup for Ms. Marvel’s new mission. The fight comic portion, drawn by Iban Coello, is super exciting and should please Cyclops fans. He takes on every mutant and takes them out with ease. Coello makes you believe in Cyclops’ confidence, and it’s a reminder that, as the strategist, he has an edge, even on characters like Storm (sorry, Storm fans!).

Three tales to enjoy.

Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelly wrote this one and make it clear Ms. Marvel is saving the history of mutants, though it’s not clear why just yet. The reveal doesn’t say it outright, but it appears Ms. Marvel is already in the past, which is a clever hook if you’re paying attention.

Last but certainly not least is Chip Zdarsky’s written and drawn backup story. It’s short, but meta and funny. Zdarsky’s art is clean and simple, knowing how to frame a story and how to get the laughs. If you hate Paul, you’ll love the ending.

Free Comic Book Day 2025: Fantastic Four/Giant-Size X-Men #1 delivers a trio of tales that not only entertain but also hint at exciting stories ahead. From the wholesome charm of Ryan North and Humberto Ramos’s Fantastic Four short, to the thrilling mutant melee in the X-Men segment, to Chip Zdarsky’s cheeky backup, this issue packs value, variety, and vision into a single free package. Whether you’re a diehard Marvel fan or just testing the waters, there’s something here to spark your interest as well as some speculation.

Cyclops gets a standout moment in a visually dynamic X-Men fight sequence
Chip Zdarsky’s backup brings humor and style in a compact dose
Ms. Marvel’s mission tease is a bit too vague to land with full impact
