X-Men Monday #298 – Cody Ziglar Talks ‘Wolverines & Deadpools’

Plus, an eXclusive look at ‘Wolverines & Deadpools’ #1 and #3’s cover!

Welcome, X-Fans, to another uncanny edition of X-Men Monday at AIPT!

After Deadpool & Wolverine made over $1 billion at the international box office, it was a given you’d see more than a few new comics featuring this very violent odd couple. And you have! But only one upcoming limited series features Deadpool and Wolverine and their daughters! I’m, of course, talking about the three-issue Wolverines & Deadpools, which kicks off July 2, 2025, and brings together Logan, Laura Kinney, Wade Wilson, and Ellie Camacho.

Helping unite these deadly families is current Deadpool writer Cody Ziglar, who’s here to tell us what we can expect in the pages of Wolverines & Deadpools. Let’s see what he has to say.

AIPT: Welcome to X-Men Monday, Cody! As this is your first time stopping by the column, I was wondering if you could share your first X-Men eXperience as a fan.

Cody Ziglar: Like most people my age, I think I first really discovered the X Men through the Fox animated series from the ‘90s. I just have a distinct memory of the theme song and the Sentinels and being completely floored by them! I feel like there were a few video games for the SNES and Genesis around that same time frame that really got me hooked as well. Then, when X-Men vs. Street Fighter came out, I was fully in!

AIPT: For X-Fans who weren’t reading your Deadpool run, what do they need to know going into Wolverines & Deadpools #1? Can anybody jump right in?

Cody: I’ve made it so it should be pretty easy to jump in right away if you haven’t been keeping up with my Deadpool — I try to do that with any crossover/event type book I write. But to catch folks up, the only thing you really need to know is Wade has a daughter, Ellie Camacho, who has powers like his, and they’ve been running a boutique mercenary business for most of the run!

AIPT: What’s your elevator pitch for Wolverines & Deadpools?

Cody: A superhero play-date between two girl-dads from opposite ends of the moral spectrum.

AIPT: X-Fan The Majestic Phenomenal Whacky Fan of ‘Pool wonders what it’s been like to go from reading Deadpool as a comic book fan to now writing for the Deadpools.

Cody: It’s been very surreal, to say the least! Deadpool was the first character who I read every single thing they’re apparently in. And I mean everything, from random one-shots to this Batman/Superman story where Slade Wilson runs into definitely not Wade Wilson.

So I was very nervous when I was first offered the job, but after some breathing exercises, I calmed down and jumped right into it!

AIPT: X-Fan CosmicGeorge wants to know what you love the most about Wolverine and Deadpool. (And I’m not sure which Wolverine and Deadpool CosmicGeorge is referring to, so let’s go with all four!)

Cody: I mean, Logan is just one of the classic Marvel characters, so it’s hard to pin down just one reason why I love him so much! For this story, he just seemed a perfect person to bounce off of Wade, and their history is so fun and deep that it just seemed natural!

As for Wade — I mean, what’s not to love about an annoying unkillable man who is trying his best to raise a daughter?

Ellie has been one of my favorite new characters to write/discover; she’s smart, impulsive, a bit of a brat, and is absolutely not above putting her foot down if she thinks her dad isn’t doing the right thing/making the right play. I see a lot of the same qualities in Laura, only she has more experience which is how they enter into this “little sister/big sister” situation.

AIPT: Well, on that note, Logan and Wade have a well-established relationship, but what can readers expect from Laura and Ellie’s dynamic?

Cody: There’s a bit of a standoff at first, mostly light teasing, but they settle in a mutual respect and more sisterly place toward the end.

AIPT: X-Fan Weapon X from Temu is curious to know if we can expect an appearance from Gabby in this limited series.

Cody: Gabby’s presence will definitely be felt, but I can’t say exactly how without spoiling.

AIPT: X-Fan Batsu wants to know what you can tell us about the villain or villains the Wolverines and Deadpools might face. Any new adversaries?

Cody: Again, I don’t want to spoil anything but it involves the Shadow King as well as some classic Deadpool/Marvel villains.

AIPT: On the art front, you’re continuing to collaborate with Rogê Antônio. What can readers expect from this limited series’ visuals?

Cody: Rogê is an incredible artist who I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with for most of the Deadpool run, alongside Andrea Di Vito. Rogê is drawing some of the coolest (and funniest) stuff in this mini, and I’m so excited for folks to see what we cooked up.

AIPT: Finally, in honor of Father’s Day in a few weeks, let’s pretend Laura and Ellie are coming to you for planning advice. What do you think would be Logan and Wade’s ideal Father’s Days?

Cody: Logan would probably like nothing more than to drink some beers and chop wood with Laura in the Canadian wilderness. Wade wants to schedule an arts & crafts day with Ellie, Princess, and Taskmaster.

AIPT: I’d say Wade’s sounds like more fun. But on that note — thanks for stopping by X-Men Monday, Cody!

Remember, X-Fans, Wolverines & Deadpools #1 goes on sale July 2, 2025. Here’s an eXclusive first look at a few of that issue’s unlettered pages, courtesy of penciler and inker Rogê Antônio, and our friends at Marvel.
