‘Futurama’ season 13 review: Maintains the spirit while still introducing fresh dynamics

Futurama returns for its thirteenth season, and it’s as good as it’s ever been.

The Simpsons isn’t the only Matt Groening creation that has had a lengthy life on television. Despite cancellations on two different networks, Futurama is still going strong, this time finding life on streaming platform Hulu. The animated comedy returns for its thirteenth season, and it’s as good as it’s ever been.

One of Futurama’s biggest draws is its comedy. Throughout this season there are many dumb one liners that will initiate a chuckle. However, in the long run, there is also sharp and witty commentary on a variety of subjects from current and relevant issues that make you think. There is no shortage of pop culture references as well, and there are fun cameos of people, that may seem random, but who are also who you wouldn’t expect.

There is a good mix of stories from silly shenanigans to ones with more depth. The show could easily feel comfortable and complacent and deliver the same beats that fans expect, but after all these years Futurama is still willing to push itself further. It is still expanding upon these relationships that fans have grown to love introducing different dynamics in heartwarming ways.

The series works best when leaning into the science fiction aspects. Things can get a little nerdy during the introduction of these high concepts, but it still finds entertaining ways to incorporate them into the narrative without being gimmicky. The sci-fi elements help spark philosophical conversations as well, and there are creative ways that blend science with the social and spiritual topics. More often than not, the writing is so smart and clever with a level of charm.

Though Futurama tackles some serious subjects, it doesn’t always try to hide or mask how it feels. The lack of subtlety may annoy some viewers, but after now 13 seasons, it’s not going to magically shift views. Some of the storyline decisions can also be pandering trying to force connections to past history, but that is only a minor complaint. They can be a nice nod, but not entirely necessary.

The new season is a perfect example of a revival done right. It has the characters you love along with the comedy and storylines that fit the spirit while also pushing the creative boundaries to deliver brand new dynamics.

Stream the entire Futurama season 13 on Hulu or watch it linearly where new episodes air Mondays on FXX.
