NYCC Retailer Day delivers big reveals from McFarlane, Tynion, Topps & more

Stay tuned to AIPT as we bring you live updates from the show all weekend long.

NYCC kicks off a day early for retailers, press, and other industry professionals, and we have a seat ready to report back to you. New this year is a full day of presentations from all the biggest publishers, as well as other industry-specific companies such as BCW and Topps. The programming also included talks by major creators like Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane. Taking place in the River Pavilion area of the Javits Center, a couple of hundred people were present for the programming. Here are some quick looks at what the presentation was like.

I arrived pretty late in the day, but was able to hear the answer to Todd McFarlane’s final answer to a crowd question about Spawn and the possibility of bringing the franchise to animation. Todd revealed that he has been in talks with studios about both feature-length and shorter-run possibilities for the Spawn universe.

The crowds thinned out quite a bit after McFarlane’s presentation (he did a signing after his talk), but several presentations remained. Topps trading cards announced that they’ve secured licenses to create products for Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and SpongeBob, to name just a few. Though not all comic stores carry collectible trading cards, Topps made the pitch that this booming market and new licenses could only help retailers. (Editor’s note: Fleer is producing Superman trading cards, for instance)

Ignition Press also made its NYCC debut, revealing several new series set for release.

James Tynion IV also spoke about what’s coming next for Tinyonion and their blockbuster series Exquisite Corpses. After selling 400,000 issues, the board game based on the series will be coming out soon. Tynion also teased that they have a 5-year plan for the property, and more will be revealed in February at ComicsPro.
