After last week’s episode of Only Murders in the Building, suspicions turned towards Camila White. On the “Cuckoo Chicks,” we receive the backstory of the billionaire as Mabel and the extended crew of ladies try to force a confession from her.
The episode really lets the ladies shine in the ladies night centric episode. It is quite the assemblage of talented and award winning actors all interacting with each other including Dianne West, Meryl Streep, Rene Zellweger, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. All four really embrace the silly and corny spirit of the series and it’s fun to see them let loose and show off their comedic side. Whether it’s West’s Lorraine becoming more drunkenly belligerent as she confronts her husband’s potential killer or Randolph trying to be the straight woman amongst the chaos, it all so entertainingly works.
More pertinent to the plot is Loretta and Camila’s walk through memory lane. It injects a bit of mysticism to Only Murders in the Building unleashing Loretta’s powers as a medium. What we see is a picture of a person with all the money in the world who can’t buy happiness. All she wants is one special person to take notice of her. It portrays the ruthless billionaire into, like all of us, as someone with relatable insecurities.

Outside of the ladies night, “Cuckoo Chicks” also explores the roots of our main trio’s relationship problems via therapy and heart to heart conversations. They are all a little broken inside, and that’s why they are drawn to each other. These moments add depth to the characters as it dives into their issues.
As we approach the end to this season, Only Murders in the Building also increases the urgency and stakes. Charles, Oliver, Mabel, and the other residence of the Arconia are on the brink of losing their homes when a last ditch effort comes too late. Then, things ratchet up as the reveals become bigger and suspicions turn to within. Though it becomes a long and convoluted way some of the reveals come about, it does appropriately raise the drama as we near the conclusion.
This week’s episode is an entertaining comedic showcase of the cast best known for award winning dramatic roles. It’s a joy to watch their campy, less serious side as urgency and stakes of solving the mystery grow.
New episodes of Only Murders in the Building release Tuesdays on Hulu.
