With the release of “LESTR,” we are one episode closer to the Only Murders in the Building season five finale. As billionaire Camila White makes preparations to turn the Arconia into a casino, our main trio can’t fully focus on their case since they are too busy packing their things. They, like many other residents, are being forced out of their homes.
It’s not uncommon for episodes of the series to be from the perspective of one of the characters. Here, “LESTR,” as the name implies makes the interesting decision to use the robotic doorman to serve as the narrator. Though it is not quite as deep of a character dive, it does make the automaton more personable and human. It also provides a unique point of view of past events since LESTR is usually overlooked and ignored. That same point of view creates an unsettling feeling as well since the robot is a tool for someone else. Maybe the real culprit is spying on everyone gaining intel to stay one step ahead.
Much like “After You,” Only Murders in the Building delivers another sentimental episode displaying the real stakes. Familiar faces return and everyone looks back at living in the Arconia with fondness. All these characters we have grown to love over all the seasons come together for one last hurrah before leaving and risk losing their community.

Hopefully all the nostalgia and emotions of this season aren’t signs of something more than showing what the characters have to lose. It eerily feels like building to the end of the series. Though stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez have stated they would like the show to continue, there has yet to be a formal renewal from Hulu.
As an Only Murders in the Building season penultimate episode, it does build the drama for the conclusion next week. It even ends with an amusing confrontation and funny last line coming from a foul mouthed grandma. However, there are instances where the writing gets too cute with reveals. Whether it’s a staged beach photo or the big aha moment that leads to the latest suspects, it comes off more convenient and random than actually clever. Hopefully we receive a more impactful who and how in the finale.
“LESTR” is told from an interesting perspective that builds the drama for the overall mystery while also providing a fun nostalgic Last Supper-esque reunion of characters.
New episodes of Only Murders in the Building release Tuesdays on Hulu.
