Second Take: ‘The Long Walk’ proves Stephen King is still relevant

One of the best King adaptations.

I grew up during the 1980s and 1990s. During that time, it seemed like every kid went through a Stephen King phase. Some kept to the movies. Others read his books. But it happened to everyone. It was a part of growing up. Since new King adaptations are released on a monthly basis, I assumed this was still the case. So, I was surprised to learn my godson had no idea who Stephen King was.

Just to provide background, he always wants to see the latest King release. As a child, the character scared him so much, he called him Mr. Pennywise out of respect. I thought it was just him until I was told that a whole generation was familiar with the movies, but had no idea about the source material.

Armed with this knowledge, I went into The Long Walk a little worried. The original was a Bachman book written in 1979 and I was concerned how it would be translated for modern audiences. Would there have to be drastic changes made to suit 21st century attitudes and tastes?

Right off the bat, the familiar premise showcases why King has had such staying power. Set in a dystopian society, teenagers participate in a deadly game. It has been done a lot over the past few years – sometimes with excellent results – but no one was doing it in the late seventies. The Long Walk placed a focus on kids and their motivations in a way that was not really seen in horror.

The book was released early in King’s career, so it had its missteps. But the things that would become a trademark of his writing – the grounded dialogue, the great writing of young adults, and the scares – were all there. The Long Walk adaptation has taken those staples and refined them. Using a show not tell approach, the film displays the bonds that the book does not always succeed at.

The Long Walk is an emotionally impactful watch. The performances are top notch and everything in the film feels heavy. There are some uncomfortable moments that make those watching feel for the children who are taking part in the walk. It is one of the most intense watches of the year.

This is where Stephen King has always been at his best. Even in his younger days, the author was fantastic at creating worlds that would draw in audiences. You could relate to even his most fantastical stories. The Long Walk demonstrates that after all these decades, his works are still engaging.

The Long Walk is now available on Digital, Blu-ray™, and DVD! A 4K UHD combo will also be available on December 23!
