Rudolph West has been captured and there seems to be nothing he can do to save himself! Good thing he has a super son who was just on his way to save him. Things must be turning up for Wally, right? He has a pseudo-team he’s working with and Grodd on his side, how bad could things be? Granted, the betrayal from Trickster is going to cause some problems along the way for sure, but he’s at least one step closer to saving his dad! It’s a good thing there aren’t any more surprises left for him, right? Right? Yeah, no. Things are going to get crazy before they get better. Or before they even start to improve. But at least this means we get good comics!

Much like last issue, Absolute Flash #10 has an accelerated feel to it that reinforces how quickly things are happening in real time. Sure, all comics in a series are technically supposed to flow from one issue to another during an arc, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. Sometimes we get random flashback stories or an unexpected shift in point-of-view for an issue to catch the reader up on things, and that isn’t always super fun. But other times, we get a story where everything happens so fast that you feel like you’re standing right next to the main character as things are unfolding. This is a fine line between a story feeling too rushed or too one-dimensional. But luckily, Jeff Lemire is no rookie when it comes to storytelling. Here, readers are able to witness how Wally and Thawne’s paths finally overlap, and trust me when I say it will shock you.
Nick Robles continues to be one of the best artists in the business right now. While I appreciate the more emotional and sincere tone that the last few issues’ linework brought to the table, Robles truly shines in fast-paced stories. While taking a little less time to zoom in and focus on great detail to the faces of characters might bother some, I find that Robles does everything he can to make up for that by really leaning into the sci-fi with his art style. Characters like Heat Wave and Thawne feel truly bigger than life thanks to the grandeur that Robles’ art gives their appearance. Additionally, Adriano Lucas continues to balance the vibrance of all the character’s powers with his spectacular colors. This issue is full of spectacular art that reinforces the issue’s tone, pacing, and genre.

Absolute Flash #10 is another strong issue in the series that helps put the series back on track as one of the more interesting Absolute titles. After losing a little steam, readers can rest assured that this series is not going to be held down by its small detour as things feel very back on track. The only question that seems to hang over this series still is the question of whether we can consider Wally West a superhero, or if he’s just a metahuman trying to get by. Hopefully this is better addressed soon to understand how this version of Wally sits with the rest of the Absolute Universe.
