Ryan Stegman has some big career news to share, and it starts with a major shift in his Marvel workload.
In his latest newsletter, the superstar artist revealed that he’s officially stepping away from drawing X-Men for the foreseeable future. While he clarified that he’s not completely done just yet, the upcoming X-Men Annual (out in March) will mark the end of his current run on the franchise.
“I’m no longer drawing X-Men. Well, that’s not entirely true,” Stegman wrote. “I’m writing an X-Men Annual that Steve Skroce is drawing, and I’m drawing some of that. But THEN, I’m officially done with the X-Men for the foreseeable future. I had a great time working on the title and love the X-Men fans. Sort of.”
Stegman’s time with Marvel’s merry mutants has been defined by explosive action, bold layouts, and a kinetic style that made every page feel larger than life. He jumped in on the X-Men fun with writer Jed MacKay with Tom Brevoort’s takeover of the line. His departure marks the end of an era for fans who’ve followed his work across the current X-Men line.
But while one chapter closes, another is already being written.
Stegman also teased that he’s currently juggling “a billion covers” — and more intriguingly, he’s hard at work on a top-secret project that he’s especially excited about.
“I will be writing and drawing a thing, and that’s all I can say!!!!”
That final tease is sure to set speculation into overdrive. A fully creator-driven project from Stegman — who’s already made his mark on both blockbuster superhero runs and creator-owned hits — immediately raises the stakes, even with details locked firmly behind the curtain for now.
For the moment, fans can look forward to his last X-Men contributions in the upcoming annual… and then keep their eyes peeled for whatever bold new project Stegman is getting ready to unleash next.
