New Image sci-fi series ‘If Destruction Be Our Lot’ features robo Abraham Lincoln finding purpose

In a future where humanity is extinct and robots run the world, a lonely Abraham Lincoln android sets out on a strange and emotional quest for purpose in Image Comics’ bold new ongoing series arriving this May.

Mark Elijah Rosenberg (Approaching the Unknown, Year Million) and Matthew Rosenberg (We’re Taking Everyone Down With Us, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) join forces for If Destruction Be Our Lot, a new ongoing sci-fi series arriving in May from Image Comics. The brothers are joined by artist Andy Macdonald (Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman), colorist Francesco Segala, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for a high-energy adventure set in a future where humanity is gone, and the machines have inherited the Earth. The project was first revealed in an exclusive announcement at IGN.

The series will feature variant covers by Jerome Opeña, James Harren, Tradd Moore, and additional artists to be revealed.

In If Destruction Be Our Lot, humans are extinct. The robots left behind continue their routines with quiet efficiency, seemingly content without interference. All except Abe, a robotic replicant of Abraham Lincoln who cannot shake the feeling that something is missing. Convinced there must be more beyond the city limits, Abe sets out into the wasteland in search of purpose. After a near-fatal encounter, he commits to wandering the Earth until he finds meaning or is dismantled trying.

“As someone coming into comics from the film industry, I’ve been dazzled by the creative possibilities,” said Mark Rosenberg in IGN’s exclusive coverage. “And we’re making something that feels important to us because it deals with real issues through a totally bizarre metaphor, but in the end it’s all about the search for one primal, universal thing: friendship. Even if it’s only with a talking toaster.”

Matthew Rosenberg added: “This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a long time. But working on it for the last few years it has really become something so much bigger, funnier, sadder, weirder, and more hopeful than I ever could have dreamt. And getting to make it with two of my favorite old collaborators, Andy, and Hassan, one of my favorite new collaborators, Francesco, and my favorite brother, Mark, has been one of the highlights of my career.”

“My hatred of A.I. is matched only by my love for weird little robots,” said Macdonald. “So getting to make a comic about a weird guy looking for meaning in a world that has left him behind is both prescient and incredibly fun. I can’t wait for people to enter our world of lonely robots.”
