WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN THIS IS THE LAST ISSUE?

Observations
- Carol Danvers: Terrible ideologue, fantastic party decorator.
- Okay, Jess and Roger still feels a little weird, but they are pretty cute together.
- Can’t be easy to be a former villain surrounded by superheroes.
- Guess we should have seen this coming about the baby, but I was still surprised.
- Oh how I’ll miss Veronica Fish’s gorgeous and action packed two-page spreads.
- Hearing Spidey stick up for Roger warms my heart. The rest of these “LET’S HAVE ANOTHER CIVIL WAR” superheroes are in no place to judge anyone trying to live a good life.
- Natasha seriously needs to step off.
- Like, right now.
- Thank you, karma.
- …and THAT is why despite his time as a D-List villain, Roger is still awesome.
- I’m going to miss these guys :(
The Verdict
Does this series really have to end?
Every month, Spider-Woman was consistently engaging and funny—a perfect blend of thrilling/impactful narratives, great characters, and laugh-out-loud humor. Not only did Dennis Hopeless write Jess well, but he also gave her the best supporting cast of any Marvel character. Period.
The book also always looked great. Whether it was inventive sequencing for an action-packed fight sequence or raw emotion from a single character, Fish and Rachelle Rosenberg (colors) consistently produced issues that stood out from other books on the shelves both aesthetically and in how the artwork aiding in telling the story.
Spider-Woman #17 is a near perfect encapsulation of all the things that made this series great. Yes, things do get a little cheesy at times, but that’s to be expected for an emotionally charged sendoff issue like this. Otherwise, all of the things mentioned above are jam-packed into a curtain call for a character who has morphed in the last decade from a retro novelty into one of Marvel’s best and brightest.
And speaking of the best and brightest, I can’t wait to see what Hopeless and Fish do next (although I wish it was more Spider-Woman). Jess has had a lot of good creative teams over the years, but I think it’s safe to definitively put these two at the top of the list.
