The thought of having Venom spread throughout the Marvel Universe, and thus, creating Venomverse has me eager to read all five of the Edge of Venomverse books, but we’ll get to them soon enough. For now, let’s take a look at Edge of Venomverse #1.

So, what’s Edge of Venomverse #1 about? From the publisher:
The series that sets up the epic VENOM EVENT of 2017 STARTS HERE! Each issue introduces another major Venomized character that will feed into VENOMVERSE itself! THIS ISSUE, the young mutant clone designated X-23 collides with a cryogenic tube containing a strange alien symbiote during her frenzied escape from The Facility. Bonding with the alien enhances her already considerable abilities and aids in her escape, but it begins to alter her mind! On the run from the very people that made her, can X-23 hold it together or is she doomed to give in to Venom!
Edge of Venomverse #1 starts out with a bang, and throughout the issue, despite being the first piece of an extended prologue, the energy and excitement levels remain quite high. Partially responsible for this is the strong layout/panel work. The story flows effortlessly from one scene to the next, which makes for a fluid and engaging reading experience.
Matthew Rosenberg’s writing is streamlined, and his dialogue feels authentic. I’m especially fond of how open each page feels on account of his sparse but effective style. For the most part, the story tells itself, and I can appreciate that, because often times writers are compelled to narrate or explain too much, and that type of writing becomes overbearing very quickly.
As far as complaints, I wish that this issue felt more raw and intense; after all, this is a comic book where X-23 bonds with the Venom symbiote. I also would have liked some more detailed illustrations. A ‘venomized’ X-23 should be terrifying, and here, that just wasn’t the case.
All in all, I was quite pleased with this issue and definitely recommend it to those interested in Venom, X-23, and staying up-to-date with the events of the Marvel Universe. Edge of Venomverse #1 is a promising start to what will surely be an epic event. Read it.
