Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Every Wednesday new comics come out and every Monday we at Adventures in Poor Taste preview the best and worst covers as well as deliver a full release list. This week looks to be a modest one from Marvel, but Image Comics and DC Comics have them covered with Invincible #100 and Batman Incorporated #7. Tally Ho!

Brendan’s Cover of the Week:

Lot 13 #4

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Glenn Fabry

Brendan: Talk about gor(e)geous detail! There is so much going on in this cover that I don’t even know where to start! The characters are all unique and wonderfully detailed. I could stare at this cover for hours.

Dave: Talkin about a sick (double meaning word score!) cover! This is one of those fun covers you get to ogle like a Where’s Waldo picking out your favorite bits. My favorite is the group who have repelled into the girls mouth.

Russ:: This is the sort of cover that I would have loved to have nestled clandestinely betwixt my middle school textbooks, to furtively sneak glances at whenever the teacher turned her back. Myriad details, miniscule monsters, and a skull with a smiley face emblazoned on the frontal bone = job well done. Maybe it’s not too late… could always bequeath this upon my progeny one day.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Emily and the Strangers (Variant Cover) #1

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

R. Black

Dave: Graphic designers you’re on notice! How flipping sick is this cover? Once you get over how cool she looks and how rad an octopus guitar is…check out the slicing of “The Strangers” at the bottom, the circle highlighting the “M” in Emily and the awesome cat on the Dark Horse logo. Too many sweet things to name! Mind blown!

Brendan: This cover is fantastic. The proportions, the color scheme and the simplicity really move this beyond being another comic cover and into the realm of true art. There is nothing to dislike about this cover.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions:

X-Men Legacy #5

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Mike Del Mundo

Brendan: I don’t know why, this cover just strikes me as awesome. I think the puzzle motif is interesting and well done. I also think the contrast between the plentiful distress on our heroes’ faces and the cocksure grin of our puzzled villain is perfect. And look at Wolvie trying to get things together! You’re doing great, bub!

Dave: I don’t get why Legacy hasn’t been murdered yet. The fool has lost his mind and threatened reality itself so many times you’d think The Watcher would do us a favor and cap this puzzling fellow.

Russ: “Does Uatu have to cap a bitch?” — the slogan for the latest mini-series from Marvel, Uatu the Watcher: Thug Life, by Rob Liefeld and Dave Brooke.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions:

Invincible #100 (Cover C)

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Marc Silvestri

Dave: If you’ve read this site for the last year you’ll know a fall seasonal cover wins me over every time, so there’s that, but I also really love what Silvestri has done with the decomposed bones. It’s haunting.

Brendan: The colors and composition perfectly display the emotions of mourning. The details in the leaves and corpse are top notch. This would have been my #1 pick if DAAAAAAAVE hadn’t picked it before me.

Hawkeye #7

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

David Aja

Dave: Comic book cover as pulp novel, take one! It was genius to make this so simple, namely so people wouldn’t miss the wear that’s taking place on the binding at left.

Brendan: Finally, Marvel gets the hint! Drop the boring guy with a bow and arrow and replace him with a bitty and a gun. Now we finally have something! The simplicity is what makes this cover shine and shine it does.

R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned #3

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Dave Wilkins

Dave: Haunted trains and cowboys…I love! Anyone who has read The Dark Tower knows about the insane train, but how about this one eh? The metal of this thing looks alive as it’s shiny skin and veinyness is gross and evil looking.

Brendan: I’m much more entranced by the vivid western dusk than by the ghost train. The colors bouncing off the rocks and clouds are gorgeously displayed.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Batman Incorporated #7

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Chris Burnham

Brendan: But why? Why are those babies so angry? And why do they all have such horrible teeth? For some reason this cover makes the dream matchup of you vs. 100 2nd graders seem much more frightening than previously imagined.

Dave: This series proposed the idea of Leviathan as a secret cult with followers everywhere among us. I guess they decided to recruit in schools heavily based on this picture. The only thing I hate about this cover is the pee yellow of the sky and the little girl with the lighter is particularly creepy.

Red Lanterns #16

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Miguel A Sepulveda

Dave: WTF is that flame special effect going on at the bottom? Did the artist seriously just copy paste those flying penis-bots over and over? Way too many special effects in this thing. ILM is disgusted with this. George told me himself.

Brendan: I think the fire would have worked better if it was more opaque and apparent. I appreciate the attempt of lifelike transparency but it just doesn’t work in this medium. As for the billion identical robots: I get the concept but it does fall a little flat.

Spawn #227

Comic Book Preview: 1/30/13

Todd McFarlane

Dave: Todd has been doing the homage thing in Spawn for a few months now, but this one takes the cake. You’re seriously ripping off your own iconic Spider-Man cover to increase Spawn sales? How low can you go?

Brendan: I must say I feel as though McFarlane ran out of ideas somewhere in the late 90s and has been giggling his way to the bank every Friday since.

Russ: “Homaging the covers I made for Spider-Man all those years ago! That’ll show Marvel. Don’t tread on me! Wait, what do you mean ‘This isn’t 21 years ago and nobody cares anymore, Todd,’ and ‘Please, for the love of God let it go?'”
