Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 – Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

And just like that we have found ourselves trounced within the confines of another Monday. We’re sad to admit that we cannot free ye corporate slaves of your cubicle prisons. We cannot relinquish you from your hellish nine-to-five. What we can do, however, is hopefully bring a few moments of joy to your otherwise joyless workday in the form of our weekly comic cover preview. Hopefully our praises and jabs of the covers that shall soon manifest into the physical will guide you to think of the kind future that awaits you.

Come. Let us dream together.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Suicide Squad #19

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Travel Foreman

Dave: This cover has an exciting perspective but let me direct you to the bloody puddle at the left center. It’s reflecting the dude behind Deadshot. That’s impossible! Way to muck up a pretty sweet cover! I don’t even think you could reflect that face no matter the perspective.

Brendan: I mean, is that really our biggest complaint? Yeah, the reflection is hella-wonky but I think it’s one of the smaller problems with our cover. My main gripe would be that while it was a nice attempt to find a new perspective the end result is rather muddled and half-assed. Middle guy doesn’t even have arms! The only thing that outlines and separates the characters are the jarring color jumps and outside of Deadshot everyone looks half drawn.

Uncanny X-Men #4

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Chris Bachalo

Dave: Let’s get something straight. I flipping love the colors used, the sword and Magik is looking hellah hot. This cover is awesome in nearly every way. That said, and this is nitpicking I know, what the hell is going on with those pigtails?! It’s like they’re symbiotes ready to strike!

Brendan: This is my friend Dave. He finds a 8/10 cover and gives it a one because of some rigid pigtails. Ain’t that a bitch?

Batman Arkham Unhinged #13

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Eric Nguyen

Brendan: Uh oh! Somebody found the colored pencils box! While I do appreciate the quality drawings that lie underneath this paint spill, I have to say that Eric’s attempt at rainbow-mode went a bit off kilter. It’s a shame, really. There are some nice visuals to be witnessed here but they are simply lost underneath the oversaturation of every color visible by the human eye.

Dave: I agree with Brendan. It’s an odd choice for colors, not necessarily the number of them, but because it has an unnerving color bleed look. Did a couple double takes to iron out why the colors change so dramatically.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions:

Saga #12

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Fiona Staples

Dave: This cover is a little too static and flat, but I picked it for the pretty sweet idea of our TV headed alien and his color bars face of death! It’s clever and forces a double take.

Brendan: I like the way that they muted the other colors in order for that cute colorbar gimmick to fly. I think it was a good decision, as well. I must say that while I find the majority of the earlier character portrait covers of Saga to be rather boring, as time goes forward they are getting better and better. I can’t wait to see what else this series has in store.

Uncanny X-Men #4 Variant

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Kris Anka

Dave: Cuckoos versus Emma, round one! Emma’s mind powers are crap right now, which can’t hold well with the cocky Cuckoos. Anyhoo, the cover is sweet as the lines do a good job centering the tiny titles. The Cuckoos are looking super evil and Emma’s costume is super hot. Sure the costume chauvinistic and kind of impossible, but I dig it.

Brendan: Dave, I think it’s rude that you would be so sexist as to bash this cover for having small breasted… OH… you said tiny TITLES. My bad.

I enjoy a lot of this cover. I think that the whited out eyes is a fantastic touch that shows off the mental battle being waged as well as making everyone look just a tad more evil. I love the brain-wave lines at odds with each other and I really enjoy the choice to blend the Cuckoos in with the background colors almost as if it were to represent that they are more in touch with the brainwaves while Emma struggles in a more physical realm.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions:

Fearless Defenders #3

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Mark Brooks

Brendan: What we have here are some saucy sirens that are as equally, if not more, badass as they are appealing. I love the the facial details (or lack thereof) and the colors have a great pop to them. If only there were something going on in the currently-blank background then this cover could have been a top pick.

Dave: I like this cover for the coloring and detail work with the costumes. The shiny materials aren’t easy to do kids.

Wolverine #2

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Alan Davis

Brendan: The only reason Wolvie escaped the WTF section this week is because it was rather oversaturated with content already (just one of those weeks I s’pose.) For every good thing about this cover (ignore Logan’s face, pls) I just can’t get over the laughable fact that Wolverine is about to put the bladed hurt on this kid with what looks like no remorse! It’s worth a flip-through just to see if Logan does the deed!

Dave: The gun is pretty sweet but I’m not sold on this cover. Having read the first issue I know why he’s going to kill this kid, but the cover surely makes anyone not familiar with the story get a bit of a shock..

Brendan’s Cover of the Week:

Age of Ultron #5

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Rock-he Kim

Brendan: Know what I think the world needs more of? Badass guys in pink. I really chose this cover for the colors more than anything, although during my analysis I also fell in love with the small, alien details throughout the cover. I also appreciate the simple shading in the background that creates the cylindrical feel.

Dave: Ultron don’t give a rats ass if you think he’s a pansy ass girl. Robo-man’s got spikes, fist slams and tentacles. Ain’t nothing more masculine than bad guy tentacles!

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Sex #2

Comic Book Preview: 4/10/13 - Sexy Leather and Nipple Shadows

Piotr Kowalski

Dave: Check out that sweet futuristic city, the sweet randomish title superimposed with flat straight white font and the super sweet shadows. Oh yah, and there’s a naked lady too! I love how you can make out one nipple, which keeps the cover PG enough to hit the stands but at the same time confirm our lady is nude.

Brendan: I would have said this cover was perfect but that goddamned nipple bothers me. I just think that the small touch of an erect nipple is entirely gratuitous. I mean, we all pretty much assumed she was naked before noticing those extra few black pixels, right? Outside of that one minor annoyance this cover is top-notch. I love the colors, shadowing, detail and typography used on this cover.
