B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: A Cold Day in Hell Part 2 (Dark Horse)

Is It Good? BPRD Hell on Earth: A Cold Day in Hell Part 2 Review

So many B.P.R.D. series. They just keep going. And going. So…many…of…them. But we loves them all. So many monsters for us. Mike Mignola and John Arcudi continue to play the keys, with lines and forms by Peter Snejbjerg.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth A Cold Day in Hell Part 2: Bogus Journey is a return to the frozen wasteland of death known as “Russia.” We watch as some members of the Russian organization with ties to the Bureau in America known as the S.S.S. – Special Sciences Service, deal with a looming threat in the form of a little girl who be more than she appears. There’s a great little visit to Hell at the beginning, which is nice, considering so many of the Hell on Earths merely deal with the Hell on Earth, and not the Hell in Hell proper.

Is It Good? BPRD Hell on Earth: A Cold Day in Hell Part 2 Review
Ah, the mountains of Hell are beautiful this time of year. The way the screaming, burning souls squirm in torment over the ashy peaks. Breathtaking.

This issue, and series, was fun. Fun to see B.P.R.D. in Russia. However, I can’t help but feel like not a lot happened in this series. Yes, we got to see the S.S.S. on their home turf, and yes, a lot of demon fighting happens near the end of the issue. But for some reason, perhaps because I’ve seen so many B.P.R.D. agents already fighting monsters in the other B.P.R.D. Hell on Earths…I don’t know. We hear about a character that is a major threat, and then she appears to be taken out very easily. Perhaps I long for the old anticipation of a world where Hell had yet to be vomited forth? It’s hard to be too afraid for the world when Hell has literally erupted like a volcano, and despite massive worldwide devastation to cities, people seem more or less okay.

  • Monstahs getiin’ ripped through with bullets
  • Get to see how the S.S.S., B.P.R.D. in Russia operates
  • Awesome art from Snejbjerg
  • Underwhelming, despite the build up

Snejbjerg’s art is really righteous, which is what keeps the somewhat blasé storyline from ruining the issue. I will admit I’m kind of stubborn when it comes to the form of people. I really hate pointy noses (see my review of B.P.R.D. Vampire #1 and review of Sledge hammer 44 #2 for proof). But for the most part, happy with most kinds of art style, save for faces which obviously I’m snooty about. Peter Snejbjerg draws great faces, and great monsters too. Google, tell me more of this man!

Is It Good?

I would say this one is like an average taco. Tacos are still amazing, even mediocre ones, so you can bite down and enjoy. But, I can’t help but think about better tacos I’ve eaten, so while my belly is full, perhaps I’ll hit up the van down the street, as opposed to this place again. Seriously, I want to try that taco van down the street.
