WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Battlestar Galactica #2

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Alex Ross

Dave: Way to get a butt shot into a Battlestar cover, Mr. Ross. It’s glowingly obvious this cover was forced, particularly because the female and the ships don’t seem to match up. It’s like he had two covers and decided to just Photoshop them together willy nilly. I mean…what is she standing on, and why is her right foot floating?

Brendan: I enjoy the “GLOWINGly obvious” pun by my pal, David. I don’t know what psychedelic acid trip Mr. Ross discovered these hues on, but I had hoped we were beyond the neons by now. My only regret regarding the booty shot is that it isn’t that great of a butt. It’s closer to something you’d find on a middle-aged housewife than a desirable heroine.

Savage Wolverine #6

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Humberto Ramos

Brendan: Once again Ramos has tripped over the cartoony line and landed straight into WTF territory. While Spidey always looks good in this style, Elektra’s odd proportions pigeonhole her into this realm of “not sexy but not tough either”. Wolverine is looking a bit… special… on this cover. His facial expression isn’t screaming “Rawr” as much as it’s screaming “MOOOOMMMMM”.

Dave: Wow, dead on with the “Mom” comment. I particularly dislike his giant chompers too. It’s like his whole head are teeth.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Aphrodite IX #2

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Marc Silvestri

Dave: So it’s a little bit of a cheesecake cover, but, and I mean this very seriously, Silvestri’s choice of having the front of the skirt cover her genitals is tasteful. It’s also kind of sexy. On top of that I love the detailed work of the boots and gloves. I’m not sold on the thrown together background however, and the fire is silly at best, but it’s still an exciting and interesting cover to look at.

Brendan: While the pose is a bit exploitative I have to admit the colors and detail are what really shine. This may be a bit of a generic pose, but it’s a generic pose done right.

Batgirl #21

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Alex Garner

Dave: This is a wonderfully creepy and atmospheric cover due to the lighting and beautiful work on our figures. The only reason it’s not my cover of the week is that the acting in the shot is a little staged. Batgirl looks like she’s pretending to be scared instead of actually being scared.

Brendan:I do love the color and detail of this picture. I enjoy the light, haunting touches such as the deterioration of Batgirl’s emblem. I think the realism of Garner’s faces rivals Alex Ross, minus the vomit-inducing neons mentioned earlier.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Half Past Danger #2

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Stephen Mooney

Brendan: I love the wrinkle-man that is hidden inside her coat. The bright red crossing over from the logo to the jacket works incredibly well to unify the cover. Also, we have another example of a sexy dame that only requires a bit of leg and a gun. Butt shots need not apply.

Dave: The femme fatale is looking extra evil with her smoky makeup and deviously slinky dress.

Half Past Danger #2

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Declan Shalvey

Brendan: And for everything else you may have been missing from the Mooney cover you need look no further than this here variant! What’s not to love? Sharks, dinos, men dropped from aeroplanes? This cover literally has it all. On top of that, it is all drawn impeccably well. Amazing detail pours from your fish and from your dinos. The sweeping sketch of jungle landscape is simple yet vivid, and the Indiana Jones travel map is rich with subtle islands.

Dave: I really liked this cover too, and only opted not to pick it because of the sort of blank bottom. That said, love the drama of the man falling. It’s pretty exhilarating how he’s drawn and a real testament to Shalvey to capture it so well without a background or facial expression. Also love how musclebound the raptors are.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Savage Wolverine #6

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

J. Scott Campbell

Dave: Sure, Elektra has never looked as J. Scott Campbellized, but I love me the crisscrossing Wolverine and Spider-Man a whole lot. Their directions are exciting and Electra’s cutting through the center is controlled and interesting.

Brendan: I give props to the VS layout, but that Elektra has me cringing. Her head has been melon-ized and her figure has crossed into the “too perfect” category. Wolvie and Mr. Spider look well enough. I may be the only dude to ever mutter this, but I wish Campbell spent more time drawing men.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Six Gun Gorilla #1

Comic Book Preview 6/12/13: J. Scott Campbellized Mom Butt

Ramon K. Perez

Brendan: Teetering on the edge of WTF, I think this cover safely tips onto the side of awesome. I just love the expression on our gunman, as well as the subtle details in his belt and pistol. The colors force you to pay attention and relinquish second looks. Fear not, however, because the time spent will reward you with fun, intricate detailing.

Dave: That is some gloriously awesome perspective at work, I must say! I love how Perez has captured the slinky simian-like movement in the left arm that’s pulling the gun up. My only gripe are those blue eyes at the bottom, which take away from where our eyes should be focused.
