Is It Good? Hinterkind #8 Review

Let’s return to the world of Hinterkind and see what Ian Edginton and Francesco Trifogli have in store for us. Will it be great; will it be interesting; will it be exciting? Most importantly, is it good?

Hinterkind #8 (Vertigo Comics)

Star, Jubal, and Asa are stranded inside a mall, which is surrounded by centaurs on all sides who want to kill them. With the odds stacked against them and one of their group wounded, the future looks very grim. Meanwhile, Prosper and John Hobb discover that the ogres that attacked them last time are not so dangerous and are in need of a little help.

Though I can check again if you want just to be sure.

With the last issue, I praised the series for finally starting to develop its characters and flesh out their backgrounds. The issue added new levels and depth that I greatly appreciated as a person who enjoys characters. This issue, happily, is no exception to that and continues to develop its cast — especially with Star. In fact, some of the scenes where the characters are just talking and bonding, even if they are enemies normally, are pretty good and makes them feel more real. The best scene of that would be the opening with three in the mall talking to each other and Asa commenting on her fascination with the monsters.

The story is no slouch either. The series really feels like it’s really coming together with more interesting storylines and subplots, especially going back to that cliffhanger at the end of the sixth issue. Again, this is all thanks to characters that are getting stronger and also more development and backstory for the world, along with a great ending (I personally loved it and was very happy with it). The dialogue is still decent, the story flows well, and nothing feels awkward. It’s still slow in certain areas that makes the pacing crawl once in a while; this issue doesn’t get exciting until half way through for the most part. Still, the comic is slowly improving bit by bit and it’s impressive to see how much far the comic has come.

Amish ogres… sure, let’s go with that.

The artwork by Francesco Trifogli is par for the course; perfectly fine. The monsters/creatures/Hinterkind all look decent enough, the action is depicted decently, I like the colors used to make the flashbacks stand out, and there is some genuinely creepy imagery in the book. Also, looking at the past issues and now, the linework is still improving. However, it’s still bland in areas, like most of the coloring and layouts, which fails to excite me as I read it. It does make me wonder what this book might look like it was drawn by someone else though; say Christopher Mitten of Umbral or Tom Mandrake from Night Force.

Is It Good?

Hinterkind #8 is a comic that continues the trend of the series improving over time, slowly but surely. The story and characters are becoming more engaging, while the writing and artwork is improving in other areas. It’s still a way off from becoming a must read book, but if it continues to grow, this could be something truly special.
