Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

In the last issue we witnessed MJ and Spider-Man’s daughter finally learning who the underground heroes are and their involvement with keeping them and Spider-Man alive. Unfortunately the big bad guy known as Regent—the same guy who took out nearly every superhero on Earth—has captured Spider-Man. Is this the end?!

Dan Slott writes a wickedly good issue here with plenty of Spider-Man moments and fun twists and turns. Want to see Spider-Man use a joke to dramatic effect? You got it. Want to see MJ kick butt? You’ll see that too. This issue is all about the Spider-Man family kicking ass and taking names. Regent’s ultimate plan is an interesting one; it isn’t explored, but that’s okay because Spider-Man fans get everything they’d ever want out of a series like this. Essentially Dan Slott has written the ultimate elseworld Spider-Man tale complete with a super happy ending and exciting action moments. What is an iconic Spider-Man story without Spider-Man using his will to win? You get that here too. All in all this is a fun read for most but an iconic read for fans.

Language!

Some might argue Regent goes down for the count too easily, but I didn’t find that to be an issue here. The fact that it takes all of the Spider-Family to beat him is explanation enough. I do find it odd MJ could slip into the extra Regent suit and using it (why would he even have that lying around?). A plot hole that’s cute and forgivable because it’s cute.

I love that he gets Dazzler and Dagger mixed up.

Adam Kubert and Scott Hanna do an exceptional job with the art as well. There are quite a few splash pages to oggle and the layouts are incredibly dramatic and fun. The opening double page spread knocks you on your heels as you see the heroes run across the top of the pages and when you turn the page there’s a fantastic full page spread of Spider-Man remembering the memorable moments of his life as he slips into death. Later layouts get funky and fun with plenty of movement and interesting organizations to keep you on your toes.

It’s almost like she can fly.

Is It Good?

This is a fantastic end to one of the most exciting and easily accessible Secret Wars tie ins. The fact that the story begins and ends in this miniseries makes it all the more purchasable by fans of Spider-Man of all ages.
