Drones #1 Review

I honestly am at a loss for words with this book, and I’m not quite sure if that’s a bad thing, or if I didn’t get it.

Let me explain.

Drones #1 (IDW Publishing)

Wait..what?
This character does not appear in this book. I think. Unless it’s a dude named Frank?

On the surface, this looked interesting. I’ll admit, I’ve had a moment or two of wondering if drone piloting is like Call of Duty, or something you could pick up on the weekend for some extra scratch, so my interest was piqued. I think in today’s warfare world, the thought of controlled, hellfire missile-carrying RC toys is very interesting.

This book? Doesn’t really give you that.

Okay, so there are drones, true. There’s also a terriorism themed hotel that can kidnap you and put you in a human meat pyramid for a nominal fee. There’s also a talking goat, who ruminates (get it?) on philosophical questions while goring people with his horns.

Drones #1 Review
Yeah, I think the acid juuuuuuuust kicked in.

To put it bluntly, I have absolutely no fucking idea what is going on.

Is It Good?

Jesus…I don’t know! I’m afraid that the off-kilter stream of consciousness plot and story are secretly brilliant, but I’m not smart enough to see through the haze of unresolved plot threads. I mean, one moment we’ve got drone pilots working for the US, and the next moment, they’re hanging out with terrorists in Vegas…but no time has passed?

Okay, plot wise I’m lost, but art wise? …Also lost. There’s nothing wrong with the artwork here, other than the fact that it’s sketchy as an aesthetic, with a lot of frantic action pushed into each panel.

If the storyline was clear, that could be an asset. The combination of the two = I’m even more lost than before.

If anyone else out there has read and enjoyed this, and can explain it to me, I’m all ears. I really think I must have missed a key point, and I’ve read it four times.
