BOOM! Studios picked a good time to bring the Power Rangers back into action. Just last week’s Power Ranger suit reveal can only help this title sell better. So far the comics are pretty damn good in their own right. We take a peek at issue #3 and ask the question: is it good?

Why does this book matter?
Writer Kyle Higgins has managed to make these characters interesting for any audience, but they’ve definitely aged up a bit. This isn’t a kid comic in the slightest, as the Green Ranger is dealing with some heavy manipulation from Rita and the other Rangers have a slightly more mature feel. The action is quite intense too–much more so than the show, and that’s due in part to Hendry Prasetya’s great art.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Green Ranger’s conflicted feelings about obeying Rita get even more intense this issue and the story progresses well too. Higgins checks in on the villains–fans will be excited to know Goldar is going to be a player soon. He also writes some believable hallucination scenes for the Green Ranger. They are at once creepy, but also intense. The biggest win in this issue though has to do with Trini, the yellow ranger. She speaks about her father and her intention to leave the Rangers to practice medicine. Higgins makes you like her that much more, but also gives her some much needed characterization.
It’s also fun to see the other Rangers question Green Ranger’s intentions. He did almost take off the Red Ranger’s head in a previous issue and he’s acting more and more erratic. They’re wary of him and unsure if he can even perform since he’s hallucinating so much and this element builds well to the cliffhanger. Considering how unhinged he is, Higgins sets up what could be an erratic and dynamic action scene next month.
I’m glad they didn’t go with this bra in the movie.
Prasetya does so much good stuff in this issue it’s a wonder he has time to draw it all. From the Green Ranger jamming on his flute to some cool scenes in Rita’s lair, there’s a lot to love for both longtime fans and those new to the series. The last page really sells the cliffhanger due to Prasetya’s rendering of a certain zord that reminds us these characters live in the real world. The stakes are raised and it’s a haunting final image to say the least. I also continue to enjoy how he’s drawing the characters without the suits on. They look their age and their facial expressions are spot on.
It can’t be perfect can it?
As usual, I don’t care for the backup. It’s very slapstick, as it should be with Bulk and Skull, but it’s such a throwaway silly story I can’t imagine anyone over the age of 12 really enjoying it.
One could argue the hallucinations are basically spinning wheels for this story since they aren’t actually happening. Certainly not a lot happens in this issue, but seeing Green Ranger sweat and deal with these hallucinations is an important part of why the cliffhanger works so well.

The stakes are raised and Green Ranger’s reliability has never been this unsure now that they need him most! You’ll want the next issue after reading this because the villain’s story progresses and the team dynamic is shifting violently.
