Harley Quinn has been kidnapped (wait, she’s still kidnapped!?) and only her gang of Harleys can save her! Or can they after being blown up?
Is it good?
Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #3 (DC Comics)
So what’s it about? The official DC synopsis reads:
In this week’s issue, Harley Quinn is still a captive of Harley Sinn! Do you think she maybe likes it? Meanwhile, Sinn has sent her henchmen to track and destroy Harley’s gang, along with each of their families. As the gang realizes there’s a target on their back, they’ll need to work together to save themselves, their families, and find their rambunctious ringleader! As Harley Quinn tries to discover just who this mysterious Sinn is and what she wants, she’ll also have to find a way to escape! Will she ever be reunited with her loyal gang? Find out more from writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Frank Tieri and artists Mauricet and Alex Tefenkgi (pencils & inks), Hi-Fi (colors) and Dave Sharpe (letters) in this week’s HARLEY QUINN AND HER GANG OF HARLEYS #3!
Why does this book matter?
It’s Harley versus her foil and her gang against their foils in an all out war that is in the bad guys favor due to… Harley being tied up and all. Plus there’s potty humor!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
The biggest takeaway from this issue is Harley Sinn’s true identity, which doesn’t come as a complete shocker of a twist, but does serve to connect the villain to this gang a bit better. That’s good, because it gives the whole shebang purpose. The character is crazy and this issue reveals she may be even more crazy than Harley herself; she’s certainly more sadistic. Because of an action taken by Sinn, writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Frank Tieri leave the reader not knowing what could possibly happen next.
Not sure they have enough time to outrun a bazooka missile.
The writing continues to reveal tidbits about the gang too and it’s done so in an economical and fluid sort of way. That helps make the reading experience flow nicely and the art helps too. Mauricet is on pencils and inks and he imbues the scenes with cartoony-looking shenanigans that help keep the story feeling light. His cartoony style is easy on the eyes to boot.
It can’t be perfect can it?
Not a hell of a lot happens in this issue (much like the last) as it reads like it’s just dragging its feet to fill pages. It doesn’t help that Harley is still kidnapped, gagged, and sitting around doing nothing. The first issue introduced the gang well and it was fun to see how Harley riffed off them, but since then it has been a long way to see more of that. Maybe the writers want the gang to shine, but most of their time on the page is spent feeling sad that Harley is gone or that they’ve been put in a perilous situation. That doesn’t do much from a character standpoint.
The plot itself is gruelingly slow too. Characters sit around for instance, while a fire is all around them and a certain character who should know about an exit doesn’t realize it until someone stumbles upon it. It’s as if the writers needed a few panels to deliver some character details. This issue also lacks the humor that made the previous so-so issues at least moderately entertaining. It doesn’t help that there’s no action to speak of and instead is just a bunch of characters we barely know worrying and complaining.
The Sinn character is boring too and that’s mostly because she’s a sadistic, insane person with no real dynamic to speak of; her reason for taking all this action against Harley also appears to be spite over a seemingly stupid thing too. Basically the character suffers because she isn’t allowed to do much beyond straddle Harley and say how evil she is.
Well heh has a package to deliver.
Is It Good?
This series is growing tiresome as it continues to drag on with very little in the way of character development or plot progression. Here’s to hoping something happens soon, because it’s hard to fathom Harley could be kidnapped for yet another issue!
