Nightwing #13 Review

The DC Rebirth has finally bought Nightwing to Blüdhaven and the town has plenty of new wrinkles to make it feel fresh and new; that includes a group of ex-villains that have befriended Nightwing. Can they solve a crime together in the latest issue?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The summary reads:

“BLUDHAVEN” part four! The Run-Offs abandon Nightwing, leaving him to fend for himself in the harsh streets of Blüdhaven. And he finds himself the next target of the Blüdhaven serial killer’s obsession!

Why does this book matter?

Writer Tim Seeley has worked wonders with the new cast of characters giving his book a decidedly unique feel. Add in some masterclass Nightwing captions that put you right inside his head and this book is one of the best at character work.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Nightwing #13 Review
Teen Titans 2?

This issue plays around with expectations and does well to mix things up. It opens with Nightwing and his new “team” attempting to follow clues and stop the bad guys, quickly separates them for good reasons, and then supplies a big twist. Expectations are twisted again and the issue ends with yet another twist. This all amounts to pulse pounding action with a top notch pace that keeps your attention all the way through. Seeley also manages to add new layers to the politics of Blüdhaven.

Artist Marcos To, along with colorist Chris Sotomayor and letterer Carlos M. Mangual give the night time scenes a darker tone (with reds in the sky) that sets it apart from Gotham. Most of this issue however, is set during the day, which helps set it apart further. The coloring has a realistic look and feel and the lettering a more personal feel that helps the captions feel more genuine. The detail by To in the characters and their faces also helps give it a more realistic vibe which keeps you attuned to the characters’ emotions. I’m also loving how To draws Nightwing’s costume, with awesome detail in his gloves and mask.

It can’t be perfect can it?

One of the big twists had a reveal as to who the villain is which I think was somewhat obvious. Maybe not for everybody, but I wasn’t too shocked.

The only other gripe was how the opening scene – set at night – cuts to day, cuts back to night with Nightwing running through the city, then back to day. It is a bit confusing as it makes you assume we’ve switched to the next day, then night, then day again. I’m going to guess the one page of Nightwing that’s sandwiched with day scenes was moved, but it’s a tad jarring to the narrative.

Make sure he’s not a zombie!

Is It Good?

Tim Seeley’s latest Nightwing story arc is getting more exciting by the issue and a lot happens here warranting a look. Blüdhaven continues to become a more complicated and therefore compelling place to visit.
