Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #6 Review

First off, I am so glad this book is now an ongoing title. I’m still not sure I believe Dan Slott that the Peter/MJ marriage will never return to the main Marvel Universe, but it’s still good to know we have the Renew Your Vows universe to enjoy.

Speaking of that, let’s check in on it, shall we?

Observations

  • Evil Magneto—just like he should be.
  • Too bad having a spider sense doesn’t warn you about surprise parties…
  • …or vegan pastries.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #6 Review

  • Huh. I didn’t think this universe/reality had many superheroes left. Still, it’s pretty cool seeing this version of the X-Men again.
  • Not sure how I feel about this other marriage, though.
  • You gotta love this version of MJ, especially her severe aversion to B.S.
  • Annie definitely takes after her mom.
  • Best/worst part of stories set in an alternate reality: Major characters can die quickly and without warning.
  • Glad to see someone else isn’t completely on board with Professor X.
  • NO! HOW COULD MY 1990’S DREAM GIRL DO THIS?

The Verdict

Now we’re cooking with gas.

With Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #6, Gerry Conway has taken the perfect Spider-fan comfort food and added just the right amount of spice. We still get the great family interaction between the Parkers, but we also have a genuinely intriguing, exciting, and unpredictable storyline unfolding around them.

As expected, artist Ryan Stegman does a fantastic job rendering classic characters from 1990’s as well as some terrifying new(ish) ones. He also infuses the story with some wonderfully brutal action sequences, reminding us that just because this is a wonderful reality for old school Spider-fans doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy for the Parker family at all.

I do wish there was a bit more consistency between the hero massacre we saw in the first Renew Your Vows series…and some hint/continuation of the overarching Osborne story…but the great story being set up in this issue makes those things easily forgivable. If this is the direction Renew Your Vows will be taking as an ongoing series, then there shouldn’t be any problem finding/maintaining an audience to buy it every month.
