Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition Review

Seeing the Ghostbusters standing side-by-side with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, eating pineapple and Siracha covered pizza, is quite a sight for sore eyes. Going into my reading of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition I couldn’t help but think to myself crossovers don’t get much better than this. But regardless of what I thought before reading this collection, you want to know what I thought about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition after reading it, right?

So, what’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition about? From the publisher:

This oversized Deluxe Edition features extra art, creator annotations, and more! When a new invention goes haywire, the Turtles are sent to a whole new type of New York City. One with a whole lot more ghosts… and Ghostbusters! The two teams will have to learn to get along quickly, because a new foe from the Turtles’ past has followed them and aims to conquer NYC!

As explained in the description of this collection, the Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters really do get along quite quickly, and this allows for the story to start ‘getting good’ much earlier than it does in some other crossovers. There aren’t any awkward moments where both teams fight one another while the reader sits back and says something like, “Idiots, you’re both on the same side!” For me, this is a major plus. The story in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition goes from 0-60 in practically no time at all—there’s just enough setup to set the stakes and get the ball rolling.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition Review

Reading through the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Ghostbusters Deluxe Edition was a joyous experience.  Sure, the TMNT and Ghostbusters are brought together in a rather ridiculous fashion, but it works very well. And frankly, stories like this—stories that bring the TMNT together with the Ghostbusters—absolutely should be ridiculous, they should be odd, they should be weird, and most importantly, they should be fun.

As far as fun goes, well, I read through this collection in a single sitting and the smile never fell from my face. Erik Burnham and Tom Waltz’s writing was light and humorous and exactly what it needed to be for this crossover to be considered a success. Dan Schoening’s artwork was filled with energy and brought the script to life.
