Power Rangers #15 continues the epic saga of the evil Ranger Lord Drakkon. Tommy and Billy are stuck in an alternate future timeline where Tommy never joined the Power Rangers, and instead joined Rita Repulsa regardless of the evil spell being broken.
Writer: Kyle Higgins
Artist: Daniel Bayliss
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
This issue is more of a flashback and view of other characters’ perspectives rather than a continuation of the chilling ending of Power Rangers #14. There are a lot of great moments in this issue including some special treats out that every fan of Power Rangers will recognize and enjoy. Getting to more Zordon is definitely needed because Zordon is an important character in this universe. Getting to see Zordon in a different light is something different but not in a negative way at all. Kyle Higgins makes some excellent decisions in this issue. Readers can already tell this is written by someone who actually cares about these characters and writes this for Power Rangers fans, but also any new reader who’s not familiar with can enjoy. The art in this issue is beautiful and is something different. Giving a new visual of the Power Rangers is a big deal since most fans remember these characters only as the actors we’ve all seen on television.
Although this is an overall great issue and it was great seeing Zordon’s perspective on things, it would have been nice to at least see some focus on fallout from the conclusion of Power Rangers #14. This event has caught every fan of Power Rangers by surprise by not giving the readers a typical Power Ranger story. It’s always been the same on the TV series but what we’re getting in these comics is a Power Ranger fan’s fantasy. Seeing a brand new evil Power Ranger killing other Rangers and taking over the world is something we’ve never seen before. The last issue ended with such a cliffhanger, I was hoping to get at least a little taste of that especially since we have to wait a month to read the next Power Rangers.
Even though this was not a continuation of the last issue this was not a bad book. Digging deeper into this story with Lord Drakkon only makes this story more powerful. And we may have to wait a little while for the next issue, but that does not take any value of how important this issue is. You can already tell that the people working on these books know exactly what they are doing and know exactly what the fans want.
Some familiar faces show up in this issue that give the readers some hope that we may one day go further than Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. When Aisha showed up in a few issues back it opened many possibilities that we could maybe see more of the season two cast appear and maybe one day replace some of the original Rangers or at least play a bigger part in the series. These characters are very well placed, not taking away from the other main characters, but giving readers and fans enough teases that may just open endless possibilities for upcoming events in Power Rangers.
