“The Oz Effect” starts this week with, you guessed it, Mr. Oz taking the forefront of the story arc. Superman attempts to save millions across the globe, but can he be fast enough?
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
“THE OZ EFFECT” part one! The agents of the mysterious Mr. Oz begin to move as the Man of Steel works to stop the chaos they unleash in Metropolis and across the globe. But when Mr. Oz steps from the shadows his identity rocks the Last Son of Krypton to his core. The story that began in DC Universe: Rebirth #1 begins to end here!
Why does this matter?
Dan Jurgens has been writing towards the reveal in this issue for quite some time, and he finally drops the bomb here. If you’re at all curious about Mr. Oz, read this issue!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Mr. Oz is a bad mother.
This issue sets up a moral sort of message about the human race which is meaningful and quite dark. Opening with Mr. Oz revealing himself to a Superman villain, we’re quickly reminded this character is willing to do terrible things to protect Supes. This then cuts to Superman saving medicine from a sinking truck and then delivering it to those in need over in Africa. While I’m not sure if he had the okay to just whisk this stuff off, it is a reminder that Superman’s main goal is helping those in need. The rest of the issue proceeds to show us why humanity isn’t worth his time due to greed, hate, and worse.
Through some well drawn and plotted montaging, Jurgens and artist Viktor Bogdanovic make a strong case for humanity not being worth a damn. Rhino’s get shot, sweatshop workers are treated poorly, and people die. A strong case is made which leads directly into a Mr. Oz reveal many will be shocked to see. Let’s just say, Superman’s purpose is now on the line.
Aside from some solid montaging, Bogdanovic draws a solid issue with his customary square-jawed Superman looking sharp. In a great full page spread of Superman lifting the medicine truck out of the water, Bogdanovic weaves in the story title with dripping water effects over it to create a dynamic page that’s poster worthy (see below). The final reveal is quite something as we finally get to know who Mr. Oz is and boy, has he seen better days!

The reveal of who Mr. Oz is will probably piss some folks off. I’m a wait and see kind of person and I’ll give Jurgens the benefit of the doubt to pull this story out fully, but it’s a bit concerning when characters’ origins are trifled with.
Is It Good?
Superman is typically tested via his might or his values and this issue is a testament to the latter. If Superman’s greatest enemy are those who do wrong, Dan Jurgens just dropped the biggest enemy on Superman ever.
