Dark Nights: Metal #2 doesn’t waste any time getting the party started. The first issue spent more time setting up the highly anticipated six-issue series while this one is more in your face with action and eye-widening moments. In Dark Nights: Metal #2 you’ll get to see the story really develop into what will hopefully become one of the more exciting series of the year.
The DC Universe pretty much always finds a way to orbit around Batman. This time around it doesn’t feel so forced and actually makes a ton of sense; the entire team behind this story has nailed what it takes to make a great DC comic book. With all the characters involved it fuels the story with variety and doesn’t just feel like a Batman story. Every member is involved in some way and has an integral role.
The cameos in this issue were fun and exciting to see but also extremely short. Characters like Constantine and Zatanna being acknowledged by the League in the search for Batman felt really nice and certainly left the door open for a possible appearance in later issues. There’s no telling where Metal may end up but from the looks of this issue the Justice League may need all the help they can get. It’s well known to comic book aficionados that Batman is always prepared, which is actually mentioned in this book, but they still seem to surprise me with how he prepares for moments as big as this one. Batman hiding his heartbeat monitor in other Bat-Family members and other unique places while the Justice League races all over to find him was simply perfection. The amount of twists and turns taken to find and take down Batman was exciting and unbelievable at times.
Carter Hall has his lovely narrative once again and has to be one of the finest touches to the book. Seeing those pages of his journal appear on the page adds a great deal of suspense and sets the tone to the bigger picture of what’s in store for our heroes. The first issue had some moments that really dragged but this issue really stepped up and delivered a promising issue. Instead of taking lovely strolls listening to someone who’s probably going to turn on you, this issue wasted no time in delivering some fantastic action-packed moments along with a suspenseful scene of the Justice League trying to find Batman.
Dark Nights: Metal #2 has its shocking and exciting moments and moves forward quite well but the tail-end of the issue really lacks in its shock and surprising ending. DC has wasted no time in showing off the Dark Knights in promotional images and reveals so we know they’re coming. The reveal of the Dark Knights at the end of this issue would have made a bigger impact if the Dark Knights have been kept a secret. The character designs for them look amazing and if I had seen this for the first time I would have been a completely different ending and would have set the bar and make waiting for the next issue even more exciting. That’s no fault of the team behind Metal at all, obviously it’s DC — but the fact remains that the lack of surprise did hurt the ending of the issue for me.
