As was reported by CNBC, 21st Century Fox may be in talks to sell a large portion of their company to the Walt Disney Company. As the report suggests, “Fox is said to believe that a more tightly focused group of properties around news and sports could compete more effectively.” So that most likely leaves out ESPN and Fox News, which may suggest comic book fans have something to get very excited about. That’s right, Marvel’s first family and the X-Men are big properties owned by Fox that could soon be folded into the Marvel universe.
TWhat does this mean for your favorite comic book characters who have had sometimes good (Logan, X-Men 2) and sometimes abysmal (Fantatic Four) offerings under their existence in the Fox films umbrella? Even though Fantastic Four was a terrible bomb one has to remember the X-Men franchise is incredibly fruitful with X-Men Apocalypse garnering $543.9 million worldwide and the hugely popular Deadpool breaking records as the highest grossing R-rated film with $783 million. They’d be leaving money on the table by giving up Deadpool 2, but it’d also mean far less to worry about when they contractually have to make a Fantastic Four movie every 7 or so years.
The deal makes a lot of sense for Disney especially with their Marvel acquisition recently passing the 5 billion dollar mark for total box office sales all time. There’s also the troubling fact that they’re running out of big event stories to pack people into the movie theaters. There’s, of course, the possibility of rebooting everything, but with 5 billion staring you in the face why would you take that risk? They may still have the Infinity Gauntlet storyline to play around with, but can you think of any big Marvel events they still own and have yet to tap for story potential? A Galactus centered film pulling in the entire MCU would be incredible.
Gaining back the rights to The Fantastic Four would also mean having most of the cosmic universe to play around with which has hindered productions like Guardians of the Galaxy in the past. Take for instance the recent trade Disney did to gain the rights back for Ego to be used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in exchange for Negasonic Teenage Warhead to be used in Deadpool.
Whether or not this deal goes through, fans can agree pulling in some of the coolest characters that have been missing from the MCU films would be a huge win for Disney and fans alike.
