It’s becoming more difficult by the issue to be able to review Kid Lobotomy, as in all honesty I feel like I know even less after reading the third installment than I did before. It’s still absolutely insane — we mostly follow Rosebud this time as she shows a film crew around this crazy hotel she’s managed to usurp from her missing brother Kid.
With more Kafka references than you can shake a stick at, the punchy dialogue and narrative make for a fun, yet confusing, surreal read. I don’t even really know what my ‘takeaway’ is from this issue…how art and stories can shape our future? Or is it how everything we do as children constantly clouds our judgement as adults? Or perhaps how overthinking the absurd creates no victors? Bah, who knows or even cares!? It’s still fun with a good snappy beat to the pace and although I have no idea what’s going on (wait, did I say that already?) it is pretty easy to follow its bizarre direction.
Rosebud finds it difficult to get Kid’s loyal staff to help her as she takes over his duties at The Suites whilst girlfriend Ottla and his concierge, Gervais, try to find Kid after he scurried away into hiding at the end of issue two. The art is still solid and reminds me of the great Philip Bond which I hope does neither a disservice and even makes me think of Mignola at times, which is a pretty neat mix. The colour remains bright and borderline vulgar or seizure inducing whilst the dialogue continues to have a punchy, quotable style and rhythm.
Overall, Kid Lobotomy still remains to be pretty cool and doesn’t feel like it’s overdoing the weird for the sake of it. Looks like it has me for another few issues at least!
