Director Ridley Scott thinks ‘Alien’ franchise should be just as popular as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’

Alien and Alien: Covenant director Ridley Scott thinks the science fiction horror franchise should be on the level of other iconic sci-fi series. Here’s why.

You’d be hard pressed to find a connoisseur of science fiction films that doesn’t have the original Alien (1979) film, directed by Ridley Scott, nor its sequel Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron on their list of essential, genre-defining films. Adding fuel to the fire of recent comments made regarding why he’d never direct a Star Wars movie (where he seemed to throw shade at director Rian Johnson), the Alien: Covenant director had this to say about the direction of the science-fiction horror franchise in a recent interview with the Toronto Sun:

There’s no reason why Alien should now not be on the same level for fans as Star Trek and Star Wars. So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the Alien(series) with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really.”

Should the Alien films be regarded on the same echelon as the Star Wars and Star Trek films? What direction does the Alien franchise need to take next? One thing’s for certain, Ridley Scott certainly seems ready to take the helm, whatever direction that may be — and that’s a good thing. Agree/disagree? Sound off in the comments.
