When the rebooted Battlestar Galactica aired, I was instantly hooked. This was the science fiction that spoke to me and it remains one of my favorite TV shows of all time. In fact, shortly before I discovered the release of this six part series, I had started a watchthrough after picking the whole show up on iTunes for $30. I’ve yet to see the original TV series that aired in 1978, and may never get around to it, but the idea of bringing both Battlestar Galactica timelines together intrigued me.
The premise is a wormhole sucks the most recent Galactica into what I guess is a parallel universe. This is the start of joining the two Galacticas and their crews together. The book starts off with Commander Cain of Battlestar Pegasus from the original series discovering a new life form in need of help and recklessly jumping to her need. While Kali, this new creature, has some earth shattering news to reveal, her actions may or may not be tied to the joining of universes. I wasn’t a big fan of Cain’s decision — action and abandonment of all precaution — but a quick search showed this is in line with his character from the show.
Unfortunately we get very little 2003 Galactica in this issue but are treated with a “What the Frak” by Commander Adama. I have no doubt this will be instantly remedied in the next issue however. As someone who never watched the original show, the introduction to these new characters and motivations was a tad bit confusing. While I don’t see needing to watch the original as a necessary prerequisite, some quick biography look ups are probably going to be a consistent must in the first couple of issues.
It’s an interesting first issue that sets up what could be a wild ride for both universes, but it’ll definitely be an exclusive adventure for Battlestar Galactica fans (old and new) only. Bridging spacetime continuum can be a tricky mess and I hope the roughly 150 pages can properly tell the story in full without having characters make rash, silly decisions to advance the plot as seen in this first issue. I look forward to issue #2 and think that will be the one which makes or breaks readers’ interest in the story.
