It’s part 3 in the “No Surrender” story arc and the Avengers are dead! Well, that’s what they want us to think as a result of the cliffhanger last issue. That can’t be though, right? Find out below!
So what’s it about?
Read the preview.
Why does this matter?
This is a big time Avengers event that could change characters or at least the team big time. It also ties into Avengers history and, hopefully, will have ramifications for Marvel Legacy.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Good bit of captioning here.
Nope, not dead. I won’t say how they get out, but you already knew they’d live. No, instead, this issue focuses on the heroes regrouping and the mystery of Earth is the “playing field” playing itself out further. Whatever game is being played it appears round one starts in this issue. That means the Avengers need to regroup and get into gear to fight the good fight the best way they know how and that’s by splitting up! Seriously though, the writing team of Al Ewing, Jim Zub, and Mark Waid are treating this like some of the best fight comic series of the past. You confuse the reader (and the heroes) and then split them up for some great fights.
The best part of this issue is how the writing team focuses in on Quicksilver and makes him the underdog. If you were never picked in gym class you’re going to feel his pain. Meanwhile, the other Avengers are asserting themselves well and it should be fun to see how they get through the battles.
Pepe Larraz continues to show why he’s a Marvel young gun. Here and there I get faint hints of George Pérez in his work in part because he’s very good at packing a lot of characters into a single panel and page. There are also aliens to design and draw and they look otherworldly. Quicksilver is sort of the main character in this one and Larraz draws his powers in a fresh sort of way. You get the sense he’s one of the greatest heroes ever based on how he looks when he speeds around.
Wasn’t fast enough.
It can’t be perfect can it?

If Earth is a playing field I’d really like to know the rules. So far it seems like chaotic battles amongst lasers shooting into the sky are about all we’ll get. I’m sure there will be answers, but it’s hard to care when the stakes aren’t clear. I suppose saving the world is good enough, but it’s hard to care about this “game” if we don’t know the rules or the players.
Is It Good?
This is good team book fun. The use of heroes is good and it’s nice to see a single hero plucked out and focused on. I’m still holding out hope we get some answers as to why Earth is a “playing field,” but I’m sure they’ll come eventually.
