Missed the latest chapter of My Hero Academia? Need someone to geek out with about it? It’s fine now. Why? Because I am here!
Welcome to the next installment of the My Hero Academia recap column! As each new chapter is released, I’ll be sharing my reactions, so be warned that there will be SPOILERS for the newest chapters of My Hero Academia as well as the series thus far.
This chapter is all action as Midoriya faces off against Gentle Criminal in an attempt to stop Gentle from reaching U.A.! Gentle seems more than happy to change his plans and tells La Brava to get the camera rolling so he can share his fight with Midoriya to the world. Through their brief tussle that continues through the chapter’s end, we get to see how Gentle’s “Elasticity” Quirk works, as well as Midoriya’s new move with the help of the gloves he got from Hatsume. We’ll have to wait until the next chapter to see how their fight ends, but this chapter gave us plenty to discuss with regards to how this arc is going!
Gentle Criminal is ridiculous and I’m here for it. Like I said last week, the stakes are much lower after the high drama with Overhaul and even Gentle’s Quirk comes off as more funny than deadly. Being able to make even the air he touches elastic to set up invisible walls and jumping pads that let him spring through the air adds to his goofy nature, as all he does is bounce things around. Knowing Horikoshi, we’ll probably see his Quirk used in a crazy way later on that I can’t see coming, but for now I’m totally content with funny fights that result in faces like this when Midoriya hits an invisible wall:
I also love this moment after Midoriya is sent flying by the bouncy wall and Gentle declares his hatred of violence as a means of conflict resolution:
Gentle and La Brava are here to bring slapstick and nonsense and pairing them with Class 1-A’s attempt to get a band together is making this arc feel like a breath of fresh air. Here’s one last segment I love that highlights Gentle’s camp sensibility:
