The Flash #44 Review

“Perfect Storm” draws to a close after a lengthy arc.

“Perfect Storm,” an arc that felt like it dragged on for way too many issues, is nearing its end. Thankfully, issue #44 is one of the better issues of the arc for sure, and Di Giandomenico’s art looks fantastic, along with some of the coloring.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“PERFECT STORM” part six! Grodd rains lightning down on Central City to burn it to the ground. The Flash is as fast as a bolt of lightning, but is he as fast as a thousand?

Tell me about it!

Finally this arc comes to and end after having a rollercoaster of quality within. This issue was definitely on the higher scale of that rollercoaster, though. The art combined with the color work by Plascentia is fantastic with the bright and vibrant Flash colors contrasting the muted blues in the background where time isn’t moving at all. All of the visuals of the issue are done amazingly by the two and the issue would likely be much less interesting had they not been working to provide the visuals.

The letter being read throughout the issue is great and really captured the emotional core of Barry and his regret of everything through the arc. My only real complaint with it is the Godspeed part feels out of place considering Barry hasn’t had Iris as a big part of his life through most of post-Flashpoint and he never ended up like him. The idea of Wally being that dear to Barry that he is incredibly excited for Iris to finally meet is a section of his character that has been missing since Wally disappeared — and even when he came back, since until recently he’s been kept in containment in Titans.

However, one part that annoyed me was the deus ex machina of the Gorilla City guards appearing to take Grodd right at the end of the fight only for the editor’s note to mention that he’s going to be in Damage soon. It completely undermines the ending for Grodd there just for the sake of promoting another book. Also the ending to the problem is just “let’s run circles around it until it’s fixed” which is just overused at this point.

The Flash #44
Is it good?
The writing of the issue is fine, with emotional beats. However, the art and colors are what makes it stand out.
The artwork by Di Giandomenico finishes up his tenure on The Flash in a good way.
Ivan Plascenia's colors are fantastic and complement the art perfectly.
Williamson writes an emotional core of the issue.
Some of the stuff about Godspeed doesnt make much sense.
The ending for Grodd is rendered meaningless for the chance to encourage people to buy another book.
