Judging by the Cover – 4/18/18 new releases

Chris and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Chris Hassan and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Chris’s Picks:

Action Comics #1000
Art by Michael AllredJudging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releasesAction Comics reached its milestone 1,000th issue–of course it’s going to pop up on this list! There are a lot of variant covers for this super-sized comic, but this one by Michael Allred has to be my favorite. From the vintage trade dress to the glimpses of Superman’s zany Silver Age adventures (mermaid Superman?!), this colorful cover shows just how far the Man of Steel has come.

Amazing Spider-Man #799
Art by Ed McGuinnessJudging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releasesSo, I’m not entirely sure where all the flames are coming from (don’t flames hurt symbiotes?), but as far as goblin designs go, the Red Goblin is one of the craziest! Hopefully Hasbro makes a toy out of this blood-colored nut soon. This Ed McGuinness cover perfectly captures the menace of the latest, crazed alter-ego of Norman Osborn.

Daredevil #601
Art by Chris SprouseJudging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releasesI think what I love most about this cover is how powerless Daredevil looks. Listen to me, I sound like the Kingpin! Seriously, though, we’re so used to seeing superheroes in awesome poses on covers–especially a character as acrobatic as Daredevil. Here, he’s unconscious, being dragged away by two everyday police officers. It’s a striking image, courtesy of Chris Sprouse, and a very real reminder of the risks Matt Murdock takes every time he suits up and hits the rooftops.

Eric’s Picks:

Infidel #2
Art by Aaron Campbell and Jose Villarrubia

Judging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releases

What is there to say besides just “holy crap”? Aaron Campbell and Jose Villarrubia knock it out of the park on Infidel once again, with an even eerier cover than last month’s. Both of those faces are amazing. The shade of green used looks downright corrosive and terrifying.

Black Panther #172
Art by Brian Stelfreeze

Judging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releases

Black-and-white covers are such a rarity (outside of rare variants) that this one gets points from the get-go for being unique on the stands. Brian Stelfreeze’s line-work is great as always. I love the smoke at the bottom, T’Challa charging forward with the spear, and Shuri’s intricately detailed costume. This is just cool all around.

Action Comics #1000
Art by Jock

Judging by the Cover - 4/18/18 new releases

Of all the covers for this monumental issue, this one by Jock is my favorite. It’s simple and to the point, capturing one of the most iconic Superman motifs of all time. The lack of a background makes one focus solely on Clark ripping his shirt off and revealing the emblem. Does it get more Superman than this?
