Great new, Kick-Ass fans! The director of the first film Matthew Vaughn has announced in an interview with Empire that he is working on a reboot of the film franchise. Not only will there be a new Kick-Ass film, Vaughn also has plans down the line for a solo Hit-Girl film!
Here is what Matthew Vaughn had to say:
We’re going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl … look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.
This news is bittersweet for fans of the original Kick-Ass films as the term “reboot” implies that the original cast will not be returning. That cast included Aaron Taylor Johnson as Kick-Ass and Chloe Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl, along with Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist and the legendary Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy in the first film.
It does make sense to reboot the franchise rather than move ahead with Kick-Ass 3 after the second film under-performed at the box office and was largely seen as inferior to the first.
Is it the right time for a reboot?

In a climate where a new superhero movie comes out roughly once a month, is there room for a new Kick-Ass to be successful?
Given the first film’s mixture of fun, humorous parody of the superhero genre and stylized hyper-violence, it certainly seems possible that a rebooted Kick-Ass could be a hit. For proof of this you need not look further than Deadpool, itself a superhero film that features intense violence along with frequently commentary on the superhero genre. With Kick-Ass the comments would likely be more subtle, but I believe the film could exist in a similar space as the one Deadpool does and, hopefully, make it rain sweet box office dollars in the process.
What do you think? Are you excited to see a Kick-Ass reboot? Were you a fan of the first two films? Let us know below, and check back for more developments as they come in.
