Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Trevor Richardson and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.
Trevor’s Picks:
Infidel #4

All three of my picks this week are coincidentally pretty spooktacular! Halloween in June anyone? Let’s start with yet another breathtaking cover from Aaron Campbell for Infidel. It’s giving me the shadow people you see during sleep paralysis, which is very upsetting for me personally. I haven’t started the reading this series yet (but you can bet I’ll be grabbing the trade) but I immediately recognize a haunted house vibe from the composition. Using the parts of the building the character throws shadows on to place the creatures is a smart touch.
Gideon Falls #4

This cover is terrifying. If the spooks from the previous cover are what you see during sleep paralysis, the character on this cover manages to look equally nightmarish while conveying a very real kind of horror only found in the human race. Those teeth and that eye remind me of Gluttony from Fullmetal Alchemist when he loses control, but more human like “The Thing” from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. In short, I don’t even want to analyze this cover further so I can stop looking at it and sleep tonight. Bravo.
Harley Quinn #44
Cover art by Bilquis Everly and Mat Lopes
Let’s end my picks with something a little lighter, but still ooky and spooky. The Grim Reapers all look creepy and awesome with excellent details in the capes and robes. Harley’s winking mug in the center grabs my eye immediately and injects a lot of cute humor into what could be a straight horror cover. Some of the reapers are even wearing different pendants clasping their cloaks together, making me immediately curious to read their accompanying Souldborne item descriptions to get that juicy lore. Bilquis Everly and Mat Lopes didn’t have to go this hard on that cover, but I’m so glad they did.

Cable #158
Cover art by Daniel Warren Johnson
I love when comics artists show action occurring on multiple floors at once. Daniel Warren Johnson’s work here is full of energy, and the reunion of the original X-Force is fun. From Shatterstar’s swords to Cable’s gunfire, all the violent yet charming details I expect are accounted for.
The Beef #5
Cover art by Shaky Kane
Wow. The concept of prepackaged human meat is definitely horrific and striking, but all the bright colors make the twisted idea pleasing to look at. This cover impresses largely due to Shaky Kane’s attention to detail; the shrink-wrap wrinkles and various price tags all look just like those one would find shopping at Walmart. This piece is just so good.
Days of Hate #6
Cover art by Danijel Zezelj
I’m a sucker for fish imagery, so this cover immediately speaks to me. Danijel Zezelj line-work is great; the tiny details for the scales are especially charming. Even the fish’s guts are lovely, as strange as that may sound. Sometimes, when they’re rendered well enough, a fairly static set of objects can make for a great cover. This is one of those times. The composition is also great in terms of text and image placement. No portion of this piece looks too empty or too busy; it’s perfectly balanced.
