I love The Rock. I really do. I still wasn’t really on board with Skyscraper going into it. The trailers didn’t make it out to be anything special. I honestly was just hoping it would be decent and not flat out bad. It proved to be better than decent…it’s actually a pretty damn entertaining summer blockbuster!
Here’s the plot: Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader. His last mission ten years ago went wrong, leaving an innocent child dead and Will’s leg to be amputated. He now assesses security for large buildings and skyscrapers. One of his former team members hooks him up with an incredible job in Hong Kong assessing the security for the tallest skyscraper in the world. The problem is he’s being set up to be framed for a massive fire in the building. Wanted and on the run, Will must get back into the skyscraper to get to the bottom of what’s going on, clear his name, and save his family who are trapped inside.
If that sounds a bit ridiculous that’s because it is, but it’s actually set up quite well. You feel for Will’s story and background immediately, and the skyscraper is quite incredible. His family, consisting of wife Sarah (Neve Campbell) and their two kids, are staying in the skyscraper with him. Will met Sarah because she operated on him after he lost his leg in the failed mission we see at the beginning of the film.
Once the action kicks in, it doesn’t stop. Johnson is one of the best, if not the best, action star out there right now. He does a plethora of ridiculous stunts to get in and around the skyscraper, and I loved all of it. There’s a little bit of humor here and there, but it’s mostly straight action through and through. I was on the edge of my seat at times, I had fun, and I was impressed with the set pieces. It was a really solid action film. It was somewhat predictable but that didn’t make it any less fun, and it pushes the boundaries for PG-13 violence wise. I recommend checking it out on the biggest screen possible.
