Jennifer Beals joins the cast of DC Universe’s Swamp Thing

DC Universe’s upcoming live-action comic adaptation has landed a top female talent.

Jennifer Beals is the latest star to join the cast of the upcoming live-action Swamp Thing series on DC Comics’ new streaming service, DC Universe.

Beals joins the cast in the recurring role of Sheriff Lucilia Cable, described as “Tough as nails and pragmatic, Cable’s fierce devotion to her son, Matt, is rivaled only by her sworn duty to serve and protect the town of Marais. As the community she has dedicated her life to defending is beset by strange forces, she must double down in her efforts to safeguard everyone she holds dear.”

Fans will recognize Beals from her role in the cult classic Flashdance and NBC’s Taken, which concluded after two seasons earlier this year. Beals is also known for her work on The L Word, has appeared in more than 50 films and is the recipient of the NAACP Image Award.

Swamp Thing will be a live-action horror show and its pilot episode is set to premiere in 2019. Len Wiseman (Sleepy Hollow) will be directing the pilot episode, as well as executive producing. Gary Dauberman (It) and Mark Verheiden (Netflix’s Daredevil) are the series showrunners and will be co-writing the series. Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) has been cast in the lead role and will be playing Swamp Thing in a physical costume, rather than CGI.

Swamp Thing is a humanoid elemental plant hybrid creature that was created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. Living in a swamp, Swamp Thing protects the environment from humanity’s encroachment and battles a host of supernatural foes.

AiPT! broke the news in an exclusive story in early August of this year, that the Swamp Thing comic book would be returning as a regular series with Scott Snyder writing and Greg Capullo drawing.
