Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”
In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Trevor Richardson and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.
Trevor’s Picks:
DCeased #2
Variant cover art by Ben Oliver
This cover from Ben Oliver is giving me serious Alvin Schwartz tease. Harley’s spooky expression combined with her pale skin and sickly-looking scar remind me of some of the less grisly, more creepy art from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The subtle use of color here lets you know exactly who the character is without taking away from the darker mood of the piece. I especially love the bloodshot eyes.
War of the Realms #4
Cover art by Jen Bartel
Now, for a complete tonal change. This Jen Bartel cover is all charm from Thori’s goofy grin to the little toys scattered around. As usual, Bartel’s stellar coloring gives this cover a great cosmic feel and even the dog toys seem to glow in their lovely hues. The child shown here looks like a wingless cherub and the composition of the piece makes me want to find out what’s going on in this book. This is one I’d pick up from the stands for sure!
Black Cat #1
Variant cover art by Peach Momoko
This is how you sell a Black Cat book to me. Peach Momoko’s line art fills the space with luxurious, rich detail that captures Felicia Hardy’s energy perfectly. Filling the background with swirls of her hair is a smart touch and every detail from the glint of light off her collar to her spiky lashes is placed just so to make the cover sparkle and pop. Her eyes and all the jewels also give the cover a shojo manga vibe that I really love. I can’t say enough good about this cover. Toot!
Eric’s Picks:
Batman #72
Variant cover art by Michael Golden
I love getting to see Bats just tinkering around in the cave with all his ridiculously high tech. All those lines, lines, lines! His expression is humorous too, like he’s annoyed by an unseen figure interrupting his work. The purples and reds look great, and we even get the classic dinosaur and giant penny. Cool stuff.
Tony Stark: Iron Man #12
Cover art by Alexander Lozano
Talk about epic. This is a great time for kaiju content, and that dragon is badass. Iron Man holding its giant maw open, even as the creature rains fire down upon him? Also badass. Sci-fi and fantasy together, mixed into one incredible whole.
Adventures of the Super Sons #11
Cover art by Dan Mora
Dan Mora makes great use of blank space here, having Damian and Jon emerge from the darkness. Of course, you’ve gotta have the threat sneaking up from behind him, and what villain could be more fun than…Doomsdame?! This cover accomplishes its number one job: it actually makes me curious to read what’s inside.
