Judging by the Cover – 6/26/19 new releases

Jason and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured AiPT! Podcast co-host Jason Segarra and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Jason’s Picks:

X-Tremists #5
Cover art by Rahzzah

Marvel Comics

This is my favorite cover of the week and it’s not even close. Drop the title and it could be a piece of nouveau art hanging in a gallery. I love the way all three faces play off one another, and the bright and vibrant colors yield a mixture of emotions that only strengthen the piece. I haven’t loved this series, but I absolutely love this cover.

Action Comics #1012
Cover art by Jamal Campbell

DC Comics

There’s something biblical about this image and I love it. The serene nature of the top of the image beautifully contrasts with the upsetting, borderline frightening imagery of the bottom — all with our unknowing hero landing square in the middle! I love images that have purpose and deliberately laid out compositions, and this is one of the strongest Superman covers I’ve seen in quite some time.

Fight Club 3 #6
Cover art by David Mack

Judging by the Cover - 6/26/19 new releases

Dark Horse Comics

I love the image of a painting breaking through it’s own barriers to impact the world around it. The serene watercolors and calm imagery beautifully contrast with the shattered frame, that evidently has been fracturing for some time given the string binding some splintered elements of the frame. It lends the game a meaning, and speaks wonderfully of the ability of art to break out of the conventions placed on it — something that seems fitting given the overall intention of the series.

Eric’s Picks:

Ascender #3
Cover art by Dustin Nguyen

Judging by the Cover - 6/26/19 new releases

Image Comics

This cover hits on a lot of sci-fi and fantasy iconography, which I dig. Intimidating, multi-eyed dragon-beast? Check. Big honkin’ gun and staff? Check. Interesting flora and terrain? Check. Add in Nguyen’s lovely colors and this is a neat image all around.

The Silencer #18
Cover art by John Romita Jr. & Sandra Hope

Judging by the Cover - 6/26/19 new releases

Image Comics

John Romita Jr. is really good at drawing rain. That might sound like an oddly specific thing to comment on, but I’ve noticed it in his past work on Spider-Man, Nightwing, and more. You can really feel the physical force of it all here, and the way it bounces up off the bodies and back up into the air is fantastic. The composition and line-work here are great, as are the lights in the background, made hazy by the rain. I dig it.

Thor #14
Cover art by Michael del Mundo

Judging by the Cover - 6/26/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

I like how big and monstrous this symbiote is. I tend to find Venom and his ilk most imposing when they’re like colossal forces compared to who they’re facing off against. Such is the case here. Thor has an imposing presence of his own though with that giant ax and the beautifully rendered, splintering lightning.
