Judging by the Cover – 7/3/19 new releases

Nathaniel and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Movies Editor Nathaniel Muir and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Nathaniel’s Picks:

Batgirl #36

DC Comics

Comic book artists do amazing work today. Sometimes the works that stands out most are the ones that pay homage to the past. Batgirl takes center stage in a powerful and heroic pose. She is struggling against The Terrible Trio and it looks like she is about to be overwhelmed. At the same time, readers can tell she is not going down without a fight. Bonus points for the Evil Dead reference.

The Punisher # 13
Cover artist Greg Smallwood

Marvel Comics

It is always fun when comic books turn the world on its head. Wilson Fisk is one of Marvel’s most intelligent and manipulative villains. This cover proves that point excellently. Why is the Kingpin enjoying a glass of champagne in front of an anti-Punisher poster? It immediately draws the eyes and makes you want to know what is going on. And isn’t that the point of a great comic book cover?

DCeased # 3
Variant cover art by Derrick Chew

Judging by the Cover - 7/3/19 new releases

DC Comics

DCeased already released one of the most interesting covers of the year. The It inspired cover of the first issue is immediately recognizable and lets readers know they are in for something different. This variant to the third issue once again has a horror movie influence. The cover features one of DC’s most recognizable characters and is instantly frightening and interesting.

Eric’s Picks:

The Green Lantern #9
Variant cover art by Jeff Dekal

DC Comics

For a character with such a nigh-limitless power set, we don’t get to see Green Lantern let loose creatively nearly enough. This cover awesomely scratches that itch. Energy projections of fearsome live animals? Yes please. The composition here is also wonderful, with the well-detailed green and white cats contrasting starkly against the all-black background.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #46
Cover art by Erica Henderson

Marvel Comics

Hell yeah. Ratatoskr is back and looking more mythically awesome than ever. Those teeth and whiskers! The fluid curling of the body, with those teeny tiny feet! Then add in both Thor and Doreen’s weapons crackling with power. The lighting is also well-done throughout. This is fun.

Test #1
Cover art by Jen Hickman

Vault Comics

A good cover is always important, especially for an issue #1. Doubly so if said issue is introducing a whole new property and character. This is the kind of cover that makes me interested to try out a new series: overlapping elements all working together effectively and conveying the story’s atmosphere in an intriguing way. The human and the technological are both fully on display, and I want to know what Aleph Null is running toward– or from.
