Alan Moore’s Watchmen is one of the most important and influential comic books of all time. The story takes place in an alternate history in which superheroes were a very important part of United States history. The country is on the brink of World War III and former superheroes are now vigilantes or government sponsored. It is a moral tale that is topical and serves as a deconstruction of the superhero genre.
The series was adapted as a motion picture in 2009. The film was polarizing with many praising Zack Snyder’s take on the comic while others derided it for the same reasons. In July 2019, it was announced that HBO would be producing a Watchmen television series. Instead of being another adaptation, the HBO series will serve as a sequel to Moore’s original.
At San Diego Comic-Con, a trailer was released. The show will look familiar to fans of the series. It also seems to be set in a even more chaotic world. It is hard to tell who the heroes and villains are while setting a dark tone.
Watchmen is scheduled to debut in October 2019.
