Yesterday, DC released their solicitations for October, letting us know what’s coming out that month. So I thought I’d give you a few of my thoughts on them.
Basketful of Heads #1: Part of Joe Hill’s new Hill House pop up imprint, this sounds really interesting. It sounds like a horror story mixed with a bit of fantasy, with June Branch trapped with four criminals, while she wields an 8th century Viking ake. After cutting a man’s head off, the head is still living and able to talk. Definitely a title I’ll give a go of. I’m looking forward to all of the Hill House comics, which should add a whole new layer to DC.
Black Adam: Year of the Villain #1: I’m excited for this for a couple of reasons. We not only get 40 pages worth of Shazam’s arch-nemesis, Black Adam, but also get to see the ruler of Khandaq dealing with a twisted version of his enemy, the Shazam Who Laughs. I’m super excited we’re getting a Black Adam comic, even if it is a one-off and it’s even better seeing this tied into next month’s new Batman/Superman title.
The Joker: Killer Smile #1: This is one of many Joker-related comics coming in October, which makes sense due to the Joker film coming out that month. It’s got some very striking covers, particularly Sorrentino’s chilling one, filled with Joker’s laughter and the Clown stretching out a smile. It sounds like a really creepy story and I’m curious to see what Lemire’s take on the Joker is like.
The Sandman Universe Presents: Hellblazer #1: This is but a prelude to the upcoming Hellblazer comic and I’m delighted to give it a go, just to get more of the chain smoking Constantine, especially in a darker tone.
Superman Smashes the Klan #1 – It can be hard watching/reading any story with a great deal of hate, harassment or prejudice. But it’s worth exploring, not only to shine a light on such narrow-minded cruelty, but also to show that despite this, there can be kindness, love and acceptance. So while this radio serial-inspired comic could be a tough read, it’ll likely be one very much worth reading.
All the above titles will be released October 2019.
